strange vibration

I have a 2000 F-250 cc, sb, 4x4, 7.3L. The truck has about 82,000 miles, and I have began to notice a vibration primarily in the floor of the truck that starts at about 70 mph and up. The vibration builds from nothing, and will last for about two seconds, before diminishing to nothing, then starting over. This is almost a perfect rythm, and occurs an varying road surfaces. Any ideas are appreciated.

Sounds like a tire problem.

Have you got a friend with a SD that will trade tires for awhile?

OR you can get them checked out and eliminate that right off.

Other than that, it can be a wheel bearing or carrier bearing. But I would check the tires first.

I thought it was the tires at first as well, but I forgot to mention in the original post is that although it happens on a variety of road conditions, it does not happen all of the time. That is the most confusing part of this problem. I was wondering if it was a driveshaft problem???

Seems I've read about problems with the center support bearing for the driveshaft on the CCs causing vibrations.

Sounds like bad u-joint(s). Replace your u-joints and I bet the vibe goes away.

I'll second the center bearing diagnosis.

Check the TSBs on this site. It's listed there.

thanks for all of the help guys. I am going to have the u-joints checked first, and see if that is the problem. Thanks again.

with u joints just because it looks good doesnt mean it is. one could still be bad. It may cost some $$ but i would drop the drive shaft, have all the u joints replaced, and replace the carrier (midship) bearing .

My '04 F-350 SD CC V-10 w/3K has the same problem. I've had it back to the dealer already and they balanced all tires. The vibe is not as bad anymore but its still there on varying surfaces and at varying speeds. I feel it through the floorboards, steering wheel and up through the seat. The brake pedal is fine. I was talking about this at work and a coworker said his SD had similar problem. He said after checking the tires, wheel bearings, shaft, etc., the dealer ended up changing the harmonic balancer on the crankshaft. He said apparently it was sticking but his vibe is gone! I don't know but thats what I'm making the dealer look at next!

I doubt the harmonic balancer is the problem with OAGES' truck. A harmonic balancer is two hunks of iron held together with rubber that reduces engine vibration. If the outer ring slips, it may, not necessarily will, cause a vibration that is consistant with engine rpm not vehicle movement.

There's a TSB out (although I haven't read it myself) about the 2003 6.0L turbos' having an imperfection between 1700 and 2200 rpms that causes the floor boards to vibrate.

Thought I'd contribute that if it's still at issue . . . The conversation was in teh 6.0L portion of this board.
