I am swapping to a 6.0 trans cooler in my 7.3 and want to add the external filter as well. I looked through the tech folder and the link about the external filter doesn't seem to be working. I am just looking for part numbers of what everyone is using. Is the Magnafine as good as a spin on style filter?
The factory external filter for my 05 EX is Motorcraft FT-145. It is a small paper element that fits into the factory housing which is at the front right near the radiator.
Im using the Derale 13090 kit mounted behind the grille. Those plastic magnafine filters come apart at the seam and leak over time. This setup takes the easy to find FL1A filters and I keep a strong magnet on the bottom of the filter. The grille comes out in less than a minute to change the filter and I like to think keeping it up front in the wind helps cool things a slight bit. Also, my next filter will be a black WIX so it will blend in better. So far so good.
I like the idea of a spin on filter however I am skeptical about the derale one as it doesn't have a bypass in it. We can have some pretty cold winters and am worried about starving the transmission with cold oil and no bypass in the housing. Does anyone know if a filter housing that has a bypass built into it? The one from dieselsite.com is unavailable at this time and I am not sure when it will be available again.
