So, I bought a new power steering pump, it didn't come with a reservoir or a pulley. I used the old ones. problem is, the res wouldn't go on, so I used a little brake lube. then I find out, there was water in the lines, not sure how. so I get it all flushed out and put back together. now, the power steering pump is LOUD! And, it hesitates when turning. (sitting at idle, then turning wheel, it sticks, then turns freely and loudly.) so I drive it around the block, come back, check fluids, and its very low again. I have a leak, dripping from around the pump, not the lines. any ideas whats going on, why so loud, even when full of fluids? why the leak, is the brake lube no good with these things? it was just enough to get the res over the O-ring. Or, do I just have a junk pump?
The whine comes from the pump. The steering sticking could be air in the system or a problem with the steering box - once you get rid of the whine you'll know.
I just went through a power steering adventure not too long ago, got great support from fellow FTErs. see this thread (https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...g-trouble.html). The purging of old fluid and bleeding new are both covered.
If the power steering fluid gets too low it'll suck air into the system and then you're back to square one. In the steps in the thread, go slow and keep checking fluid as you go lock to lock. Once I got the air out of mine it's been great since (no whine, smooth turns).
If the power steering pump is leaking at the reservoir you should get that addressed first, otherwise you'll constantly be fighting the whine.
Can you take the new pump back and return/swap (upgrade) to a model with a reservoir ?
the whine will be gone. The instability may or may not. (air in the system can make it stick but so can an issue with the steering gear box) Once you've fixed the whine you'll know the answer)
