Had the power steering pump replaced late last week due to steering/braking problems and thought my problems were gone.
Coming home tonght I had the pump intermittantly stop working 3 or 4 times. No noise to speak of, just the inability to steer and loss of breaking power while at low idle/coasting to a stop or though a turn. Once I hit the gas, steering and braking returned. Checked the fluid level and belt, everything look good...
Is it possible that there is air in the system impacting the power steering operation or is this an indication of a new pump going bad? - Again I'm not hearing any noise and the fluid level and belt look good. If its air in the system, is there a procedure to bleed or will this work it's self out in time?
Make sure that who ever changed the pump out, refilled it with ATF and not powersteering fluid. I don't know if that would cause your problem or not. I think it would take a lot of air in the lines to cause that much problem. I sounds like you may have a bad pump.

That was the first thing I checked, it's ATF. Ran fine this morning on the way to work. I'll monitor it for a couple of day's to see if it re-occurs.
It really sucks not knowing if the steering/brakes are going to be there when you need them.
The only way I know of to get the air out is to park it with the tires turned all the way to the side overnight, then all the way to the other side the next night. Repeat that for a few nights. Pulling a vacuum on the cap helps too, but that's not quite so easy.
Did they/you flush the entire system after the 1st failure? May be dirt from previous falure.
They indicate that they did. To Kwik's response above, I did the stop-to-stop process several times after I got the truck home.
As of this afternoon, I have not had it re-occur. I'm hoping for the best but if worse comes to worse I'll take it back next week and tell him to replace it.

- Thanks,
I have a similar problem on my 02. Power steering quits when I step on the brake at idle or low speed, like parking my 5th. Ford says it is the steering gearbox and has ordered a new one. I'll post after its replaced. You could check with the Ford diesel tech.

Hmm.. if it impacts both the steering and brakes, how can it be anything other than the pump? I don't understand how the gear box would cause a loss of fliud circulation.
Let me know how you make out.
- I have not seen the problem for a couple of days now... 110,000 miles on the truck and still going strong.
