We just replaced my powersteering, thank goodness! It's better now, but I am still not happy with it moaning and groaning, probably just being too nit-picky, but someone said that if the pump wasn't what was wrong in the first place it could be my steering box? Could a bad steering box make a good pump go bad? ugh, i just wanna make sure i don't buy a part i don't need and that i dont make a new part go bad!!! obviously the power steering pump was bad and its been replaced...
Did you guys purge the air out of the system after installing the pump (front up in the air, turning wheel all the way from one side to the other with the engine running)? Also what fluid did you use, those power steering pumps call for Type-F transmission fluid...
You sure the "moaning sound" isn't when you put full lock on and the pump goes into relief? which is normal but should be avoided for extended periods.
i dont know what you mean by "full lock", if you mean when my hubs are locked then no, its doing it with free hubs. other than that i have no idea what is meant by that term.

Full lock is when you have the wheel as far as it will go either to the left or the right ie if your doing a u turn. When your wheels are in this position the pump will go into relief mode and make a moaning sound.
I am pretty sure what he means by full lock is when you have the steering wheel locked either left or right. then when you let the pressure off by letting go of the steering wheel it moans a little from the relief. My '84 6.9l, my '99 Ranger, '89 F-150 all moan when i lock the steering wheel to one side, sounds like just paranoia. I've ran the F-150, and ranger for 30miles each, sounds like your just fine.
If you just fixed it, like right right now, it might still have air in the system, or the fluid is all frothy from the air. Let it settle for a while until all the bubbles are out of the fluid and its nice and clear looking again. You might still be low on fluid. I think when I rebuilt my box last year it was noisy for maybe a day or two, and I had to add a bit more fluid once or twice before it was really bled out. Remember this isn't like a brake system where you are pushing the air bubble out of the system. Its just getting pushed into the pump and churned around making it all frothy. Frothy fluid doesn't work as well.
I have purchased several rebuilt PS pumps that came with a disclaimer stating the pump would be fairly noisy for the first 500 miles until it was broken in. The pump I put on my sisters 97 taurus never did stop moaning but the one I put on my 67 mustang shut up about a week later.

i guess that makes sense, and yea i know not to do that a lot, though it happens from time to time. the noise just happens when turning the wheel sometimes, course all my friends say "thats just a ford for ya". guess i'm not too concerned, i'll just keep an eye on fluid levels like i always do. and we did just replace it, i think two days ago, so it may take a while to work its self in. :0) thanks!
