Drove back from work today, and left to go to the store, and the truck won't crank. When the key is in, there is no click, and the power is all on. I was able to arc it from the fender solenoid, so I replaced it. Truck still won't do anything. My next step is the ignition switch. Problem is, I can't find it and I have no idea how to get it out. I kinda gotta get it fixed by tomorrow, so does anyone know what I need to do?
Quick update, which turns it into a whole new question. I found the switch (bought a new one and matched it up), however, I can't get the big harness out of it. There is a grey plastic cover over the harness and its already kind of cracked, so I don't want to jerk on it too hard and break it. How do I get that out?
You should check if the truck will start in neutral. Sometimes the shifter isn't in the correct place and the MLPS on the transmission doesn't think it is in Park and won't let the starter crank.
Wow, started right up. I had no idea that was even a possibility. I put it in park and now it starts up just fine. Does that mean I need to replace that sensor?
There is an adjustment you can do to it to adjust the MLPS, but I haven't ever done it so I am unsure the exact method. I am sure you can google it or search here on FTE to find the process if that continues to be your problem.
At the bottom of the column near the u-joint there is a couple of torx screws that hold a plate to the column. Make sure they are tight.
Also I think the shift tube bushings could be causing it if your shifter is loose.
One of my trucks had a problem when I was in a hurry I didn't get the column shifter all the way up and it would do the same thing yours did. I would just push up on the shifter a little and it would start.
Glad to hear you have it going and now have a possible plan for resolution. Someone else may jump in with better details.
Thanks, will do. I suppose it wasn't a complete loss. A 20 year old solenoid has been replaced, I now have a spare ignition switch if I ever need it, and I discovered a damaged battery cable that I can get replaced before it causes something else to go wrong. And I learned about something I never knew could happen. Thanks all!
