I'm having some problems with my 1977 F-150. I just re-wired the truck using a Painless harness. This is my first truck project, so I'm really happy that the lights, wipers, etc. seem to be working fine. However, I can't get the truck to start using the key and switch.
The battery is a new Interstate and has plenty of cold cranking amps. Also, the starter seems to work fine. In fact, I can cross the solenoid with a screwdriver and get the starter to crank. I even have 12 volts from the power wire going into the back of the ignition switch. Does anyone know what the problem could be?
I have tried both the old ignition switch and the new one that came with the harness, and neither will make it happen.
I'm sure I'm missing something here. Please help if you can.
When I had this problem it was the solenoid. Not expensive at all. Then when I got that fixed and started with the key it wouldnt stop cranking until I turned the key off. That problem was the ignition module. Solenoid I would think but also like mentioned check to make sure the neutral switch is correct. Its one of these and I think probably solenoid on the inside fender of the passenger side.

If he can jump the solenoid (battery post to 'S' terminal) and get it to crank the starter, the solenoid is fine. The problem is power to the solenoid. The screwdriver trick essentially bypasses the entire start circuit, including the ignition switch and NSS.
