steering upgrade

A little history I have 55 F100 I beam, 312 engine and a floor shifted 3 speed. I have tried to make my stock steering work the shaft moves all around in the column. I am thinking of putting in mid fifties toyota power steering and I am confused on what column from a junkyard I can use. Also I heard that there is companies that make power steering brackets and pumps. These are some questions I have.
1 what column can I use on my truck. ex chevy van , ford truck etc
2 is mid fifties toyota power steering a good unit.
3 anyone ever done this swap and have tips or hints.
4 I am asking a lot of question because I want to do this right and be cost effective.

thanks

Jerry

1, Basically, any column can be used. It depends upon the amount of modification you want to do.
2. Lots of people have used this kit, with good results.
3. The swap has been done numerous times and there is a lot of info here in the forums.
4. If you don't ask, no one here can help.
Use either the search tabs at the top right of the page or just google for Toyota steering. Either will bring you a wealth of information. Including installs for various years and any issues they ran into.

Thank you for information on threads about conversion. Will start reading them. Never tried a steering swap before.
Thanks

Most cost effective and practical would be, rebuild what you have. These old truck drive pretty darn good when they are as designed and in good shape. Most men do not need power steering to drive one.

You say,

I have tried to make my stock steering work the shaft moves all around in the column.

Why not figure out what is wrong here, why the shaft moves all around in the column?.

I have a pretty good idea what is wrong but you need to investigate and be a little more specific.

Hint: Is there end play in the steering column? Can you move the steering wheel and steering shaft in and out? How is the end play in the worm shaft?

There is no movement away or towards me. I took off the steering wheel adapter and the steering shaft can move left, right up and down. Each movement is about 1/4 to 1/2 inch .There is supposed to be a bearing that the top shaft goes thru. I purchased the bearing but the bearing does not go into the shaft. Do you know any rebuilders or have a few ideas that I might investigate?

Thanks

Any pictures of this steering wheel adapter? Does not sound like a stock set up.
