I wouldn't tow in 5th, but it depends on what you are towing? - I'd say under 1K pounds and flat road, you "could" do that…
I used to tow a horse and trailer with my little 3.0L shorty, and never took it out of D, hills or not - but I rarely drove over 55 with that rig either, so…
I moved 1/2 way across the county towing a Uhaul trailer figured about 1200 lbs and I did use overdrive for flat straight parts of the Hwy - but did down shift to D for hilly stuff… I think more for going down hills, to save the front brakes too.
People would remark about the fact that I had a Class 3 hitch on her… but I did have the towing package from Ford with a tranny cooler, etc… that helps a lot for sure, esp for long hauls.
