Replacing the power steering pump

When replacing the power steering pump on my 2006 should I go OEM on the pump or save some money and get a Napa or aftermarket remaned unit with the pulley installed?

Also, anyone know the fluid capacity of the power steering system?

These buggers are sure s PITA to get to............

Just did mine Saturday. Yeah it is a pita to get to. I went with a OEM from ford an all they had were remans(said you can't get a new one). And quite honestly i don't see it lasting long. it's already making noises that the old one didn't. I've been trying to find a upgrade like saginaw has for older trucks but the search results seem to be alittle thin.

Yes, very much a PITA.

I went with Motorcraft from Rockauto. It is a PITA to get to the threaded hose connection with the pulley on, but it can be done with a ground crows foot. Considering its position, I elected to pop the pulley so I bought the tool, but they can be rented.

It takes some force to both remove and install the pulley. They can only be reinstalled twice due to the concern some fretting will reduce the holding force to the shaft. Some have recomended to use oil on the shaft to make an easier install, which for me counter intuitive to what your trying to do, keep a tight hold between those parts. If this is the second time a pulley is being reinstalled I would use the regular hold loctite as a lubricating fluid which of course would hold tighter with the small enough left behind with the pulleys wiping action.

BTW, the Motorcraft pump comes with a installation bolt and nut for the pulleys installation. I used my kit as the threading required less torque to generate the pressing force.

As Kyle mentioned, I too have a slight whine with this pump that the OE did not have. So I called RA, they sent me another one, and they paid shipping both ways. It also has the same while you can only hear in the cab when it's under load. Wife doesn't hear it, I do maybe because I did the work twice. PMO, but I still consider for now the MC to be a better rebuilt.

Thanks for the fast reply guys. I took the pump off yesterday as well as the pressure hose and the return line. Gonna replace it all. Pump, pulley & two hoses. As well as clean up the new drivers side ground strap bolt & mounting surface on the frame. So far I've only broke the corner of the plastic belt cover........

I wonder if some synthetic tranny fluid will help cut down on the PS whine like it did on my 7.3L. But that only whined when it got cold (under 10 degrees F).

So I guess it's either the whine or the leak........😎

and add a grounding cable from that drivers side frame mount to the block. Can get them at most Napa parts store.

Yup! Added that in the fall, is sure didn't take long for the grime & corrosion to return. So I better clean it all up and cover it with some of that blue battery terminal protector.

The primary reason for me getting in there was the rust of the pressure side hoses, daring me they were going to rupture. Usually I would gone with MC hoses but they are crazy expensive, so I went with aftermarket. Ford now also sells the aftermarket version hose between the HB and SB. This type replaces the hard line that is used to make production line assembly easier and has a support bracket. After the second pump I had concerns that it was the change in hose that may be the source. In brake work, you start doing a lot of harmonic analysis when noise shows up. I made up a holding bracket for the aftermarket line, but it did not alter the noise. Now I see another member has the same result.

Almost forgot. Are there only 3 bolts holding the pump on? Looks like there could have been a 4th????

3 or 4, what ever it takes.

Early trucks had 4, later went to 3.

Good one Jack, haven't seen that movie in a very long time!

This is the high pressure line I took off. Does this line look original to you? The ones I've seen posted on some of the other forums shows a different style pressure line. Maybe mine has been replaced once already?

Ford wanted $124 for the high pressure lines. I went with the Napa for $27 but had to go to Ford for the return line, that wasn't bad at $33.

I'm pretty sure that's OE by the tag, but your hoses are different then my '03s. Ignore my comments about the hard line change. At the pump pressure connection for example mine is a 90 degree connection. And if my hard lines looked like that I never would have redone them. My lines had the big chunky rust nodules and as soon as I started to wrench on them they cracked. They were close and I'm glad I had changed them before running around with a trailer all December.
