My 81 custom is trying to shutoff while I'm in gear while I'm trying to push the brakes to slow down to turn or come to a stop she does OK in neutral and park just the other gears she try to die on me my dad said it may be a vaccum leak any advice or suggestions
If you suspect a vacuum leak CAREFULLY (don't go crazy or spray too much!) spray a little carb cleaner here and there around the base of the carb and around the intake.
If you spray an area and the motor reacts you may have found a vacuum leak to investigate further.
Along the vacuum-leak route, also try disconnecting & plugging the vacuum hose from the power brake booster... start the engine and see if you can replicate the engine dying like you explained, when you're trying to slow down to stop or turn for example. You won't have power brakes so be careful and don't go real fast but that diagnostic step can help you determine if you have a failed power brake booster that's at least partially responsible for your problems.
BTW you'll get a lot better reception out here if you take the time to write and communicate better; scattered thoughts and tun-on sentences without punctuation don't invite people to try and help you....
Sounds like the brake booster is drawing too much vacuum, therefore starving the engine of necessary vacuum, causing the stall.
And I do agree Chris....proper sentence structure and punctuation are paramount.
Nothing against 81Fordcustom but, this "Texting Language" has got me frustrated as well.
But I digress....both suggestions are good diagnostic methods.
Sorry guys. The brake booster thing would probably help if it had one. It's got manual brakes.
Gotcha....then it would seem that vacuum is being "drawn off" at low RPM's from somewhere else. As inexpensive as vacuum line is, it may pay to head up to the local auto parts store and replace them one at a time. Vacuum line dry rots and even the slightest of cracks can allow vacuum seepage. You have no location info listed (environment plays a part) and no vehicle specs listed in your signature so it's hard for us to tell what your working with.
I figured it out guys. when I rebuilt the carb one of the gaskets wasn't the right one. So when I spray carb cleaner around the motor reacts. so I need to find a new gasket.
When mine acted up I bought a new set of rubber stoppers to go on the carb. as mine were all dried out and cracked obviously leaking vacuum. Good thing to do as there's a lot of heat there. Made a big difference on my 300 six.
