Hello all. I have a problem. Earlier this week my 1986 Extended Cab F-150 4x4 just died while I was driving. So I took to a local garage and had the TFG sensor ( ithink that is the right name) and then I have had is die on me while driving, but i have had it die when I would make a sharp turn into a parking lot . So at this point I have no idea what is causing this. Any suggestions?
I would guess either a vacuum problem, since the brake booster uses vacuum it could be leaking and kill it. You have to use the brakes when going slow and turning. Or maybe a fuel pickup problem or weak fuel pump?!
It does not happen everytime it comes and goes. Also it will crank right back up with no problems. Do you thin that it might still be a vacuum leak? Please advies and thanks for your help!
Only other thing I can think of might be an electrical short that makes minor contact when you turn, killing power to the ignition. You never know with a Ford, they do some strange things sometimes.
Or wait, could be timing. I would check the timing and then, with the engine running, spray carb cleaner on the carb and vacuum lines. If there is a leak that will show it by changine the idle speed when you spray the leak. Worst case, it cleans your carb and it might run better!
If the truck is Fuel Injected it may have a power steering pressure sensor in the pressure line that idles the engine up when taking turns. It may be causing some problems if has one.
Bobby, I know you might not pay attention to me for awhile, but once you've done all the guys tell you. You may want to check your fuel injector wires.
After my truck was a few years old. I have an 86 and bought her new, I started having a problem with her dying. This did not make sence as I always got her tuned up on a regular basis. Being a woman I made sure I did this as I sure didn't know anything about cars let alone trucks .Well after a few tune-ups that I didn't even need. She died one day when I was in a hurry, and this was after a whole new recommeded fuel injection system was put in after a tune up. The costs!!!! You have no idea. I ran to the closes garage and this old guy opened the hood, and said 40 bucks. What !!! He replaced the wires and I never had a problem again, well not for another 5-6 years.
None of it made sense, she ran beautiful, but just as I slowed down to take a light and always seemed to be a left light she would die. Even after tune-ups. So I hope this may help you avoid all the money I put in from going to one Mechanic to the other saying I just had a tune up and it's still dying.
It has been no fun being a woman with a love of my truck, but not knowing a thing about the mechanics.
Mine only dies when I make a sharp turn .could it be the power steering pulley or will the timing do that because I just rebuilt it and it’s running a lil rough and kind of sounds like a Diesel sometimes… I put a code reader on it it throws two codes they have to deal with the cam sensors but I’ve change the cam sensor crank sensor Vct solenoid and it’s still throwing the same code … I was told it could be the timing or maybe the phaser so what I was wondering is if the timing is off because I’ll be the reason that when I turn he dies
Being this post is from 2005 and you are talking of sensors the 80 to 86 trucks never had, you posted in the 80 to 86 area, is to find your truck year area and start a post what your issue is and when it happens.
Don't forget to list the motor size and transmission.
