f100 '73 manual transnission question

Hello

I have looked on the net for an answer, but it seemed hopeless.

How would I check for a transmission fluid in the manual tranny for a 1973 f100 with 4x4? Is there a dipstick or a fluid pan?

Regards
Nick

No trans pan or dipstick with a M/T, only found with A/T.

Your truck probably has a New Process 435 4 speed, on the right (passenger side) of the case there's a fill plug.

You remove it, then stick your finger in to see if it has gear oil.

There are two plugs on an NP435... the upper one is the fill plug, the lower one is the drain plug.

MTs are filled until the lube is even with the fill hole.

Would you remove the lower plug and then stick your finger in the hole? I think not...why I didn't mention it.

Have nothing to do? Go back to that '71 F250 Camper Special thread and see if NPD has the correct booster push rod eyelet bushing.

Thank you for replies.

Does the fluid need to replaced after 40 some years?

Thank you.

It wouldn't hurt and would likely help. Petroleum products become more acidic with age. I would change it to establish a new baseline so YOU know when it was last changed and the spec of the lube.
