Crate Engines
That motor wen 115 miles before it threw a rod. I was not happy. Upon tearing the motor down I found the rod and main bearings .060 under. I didn't even know you could get .060 bearings. The block itself was bored .060 and the piston walls were scratched indicating a dirty assembly.
I had to raise hell to get them to honor their warranty and had to threaten a lawsuit. They finally shipped a replacement engine and I proceeded to tear it down and inspect it. This time block was .030 over and the rod/main bearings were .010. The bad part? The rod and main bearings had debris in them so I dismantled the whole engine and rebuilt it again being sure to mic everything including cylinders. I reused the pistons but not the rings or the rod/main/cam bearings. I sent the heads to a machine shop for inspection and they didn't find any issues there.
I had to eat the warranty labor. I haven't used nor even looked at a ATK engine since.
FWIW, two years ago I replaced the 6.8 in a '06 Hurricane motor home and I went with Ford new, not reman. A little more pricey but had a good warranty and I didn't have any installation or durability issues. It's been running for over two years and I haven't had to touch it again except for the oil changes.
If you truck is decent then bite the bullet and buy a new Ford engine. It might be a little more money but in the end it's worth it. You won't be sorry you did.
I have installed a couple of Jasper engines without any warranty issues. I still would go back to Ford.
