I frequently open the rear windows on my 2001 Super Duty Super Cab. However, it's not convenient to crawl across the cab to open/close the passenger side, especially when I'm driving!!
It has occurred to me that a pair of rear vent window power openers from a Windstar (will my wife will miss them when I raid hers?) might just solve the problem, especially paired with a Crew Cab 4 window switch and panel trim. I would gain the ability to open them partially as well.
Call me lazy, but I find it attractive for the convenience and having a unique feature on my truck! Of course, "lazy" might not be the best term because I'm pretty sure installing and wiring this mod will take more time and effort than all the trips I'll ever make to work that window manually.
I've searched FTE and the internet, without finding anything about doing this. Does anybody know if it has ever been done? Anyone have pix or a link showing what is involved? Before I tear the rear door on my truck apart and the trim panel off the van I would at least like to see some pictures.
Hey Mike! Thanks a bunch! The information in the quote below from that thread was just what I was looking for. And I appreciate your quick response, too!!
"the motors for the rear vent glass on a 2000 ford Windstar fit perfect on my 99 sd ex cab , just remove manual flip handle and install motor and wiring"
This quote is appropriate too:
"If I don't post for awhile its because my dad killed me for stealing his" (Only make it "...because my wife killed me ..." Her Windy is even a 2000!)
Now I just have to figure out how to give you a rep point before she finds out....
I stopped by a salvage yard and after looking at a partially disassembled Windstar, I think there may be more to this than we think. The motor looks pretty big for our doors!
I'm going to see if I can get the pictures from the PSN thread to come up as well, then pull the trim panel from my truck to see if there is room to mount the motor. Hopefully will happen today, but I have a transmission to flush and plugs to change as part of my 200,000 mile service interval.
PSA wouldn't let me view the thread without registering, then I couldn't get the forum rules to come up so I could register. Tried the "contact us" link and the security key video wouldn't play.

A Unique feature? My 99 F250 xlt Super Duty Crew Cab 4x4 has power rear windows.
Wouldnt it be easier to hunt down a set of doors already set up with power windows than fabbing them up with junkyard parts?
Oh I just noticed it was a super cab, is that an extended cab style?
Yes, mine is an extended cab with the rear windows that hinge outward with hinges at the front edge of the window. The rearmost "vent" windows on a Windstar also hinge this way, but opening and closing is motor driven via a cam than attaches to the back of the window. I actually got the idea from my wife's van.
Dodge mini vans use this same type set up with a small cable driven motor. I had a set for a while I was going to try to adapt to my Roadmaster Wagon but lost interest. I think they went in the trash. Guess I need to go look for another set.
I feel your pain! "Junk" is defined as stuff you keep for 20 years and need the day after you throw it away!
I'll go back to that salvage yard next week. They had a Chrysler minivan right next to the Windy I looked at--I'll see if I can tell what it had. Any Idea what year van those Dodge parts came from?
I did take the back door trim off my truck and it doesn't look like there is any way Windstar motors will fit, even with cutting and welding in metal from a van, and I'm not remotely interested in that. The top of the back door on a Supercab is too narrow.
I've looked at a lot of replacement motors on eBay/Amazon and it looks like the late model Dodge/Chrysler are the most likely candidates for the way they mount and the actual size and position of the motor. I plan to check that out tomorrow at the salvage yard. There may be an issue with the glass on them, it looks like the ball mount is glued to the window where our latches bolt through. So I have to verify connection to the glass as well. I'll post results.
Well, I got to look at a Dodge van, and I don't see those working. But I had to walk by a KIA Sedona... There is a glimmer of hope now! They bolt through the window as well.
I haven't done a lot of research yet, but KIA appears to use a lot more cable driven actuators than other companies and the components on this one seem small enough to fit. Any thoughts?
