I just got to thinking today about how to spend my upcomming bonus. If I wanted to swap my 4.2L with a 5.4L, would it be a direct replacement? I can see no reason why it wouldn't fit, the trucks are all the same right?
I imagine that the computer would have to be swapped too, but I can't really think of anything else that would have to change. My manual tranny would bolt right up wouldn't it?
Anybody know a reliable supplier of remanufactured engines? I thought there was an old thread here about different engine suppliers but I can't find it.
It's all theoretical at this point, but I'd appreciate your opinions.
If you had a donor truck to take all the parts off you would be ok. The transmission is different, motor mounts, exhaust, all brackets on the engine, p/s pump. alternator etc etc etc are all different.
the transmission should be the same as long has it's an auto else you'd need to get an auto. the other thing is while it won't make a differance in the swap the 5.4 came with an 9.25 rear and the 4.2 and 4.6 came with the 8.8 rear end
will it swap or be a nightmare 4.2l to 5.4l triton
hello all i have a 2000 ford f150 with 300,000 miles on factory motor my 8.8 rearend went bad so i replaced it with a 9.00 and rebuilt the auto tranny . i ran across a 2001 5.4l triton motor with everything wiring harness,a/c,ps and alt.with 30,000 miles on it .i was told it would bolt up to my auto trans all i would need is computer and exhaust , and motor mounts is there anything else im missing would like everyone input thanks
Do a search on this forum. There's a 6 page thread laying around here somewhere that covers this issue. You have to swap EVERYTHING out. Harnesses, ECU, and w/that PATS, mounts, and I think I heard you need a tune as well. It's not an easy job and is something for fun as the gains are minimal.
i have a 97 4.2 and the motor needs replaced i was wondering what all engines will bolt up without changing alot of stuff and costing me a fortune it is a 5 speed and when i bought this truck it was fine then a couple months later it started using oil like crazy if anyone has any sugestions please let me know thanks

You're better off fixing the 4.2 then trying to swap in a V8 ( Although a 4.6 might work) unless you can get a cheap donor truck that has everything (block, mounts, maybe the tranny, etc...) you need for the swap.
