I'm guessing the tune isn't really designed to be used for towing. I'd stay go stock, or get a tow tune for towing.
Our trailer is 12k, never seen that high of EGT. I keep it below 1200. That's where I feel comfortable. Sure I could push it a little more, I probably would if my truck was studded.

It is the tow tune, but it's H&S Mini Maxx and from what I have seen all their tunes are pretty hot. I have a 4" turbo back exhaust coming. We'll see how much that lowers EGT but for now I just tow hills with the stock power level. There is a noticeable difference in power with the tune and better mileage so I use that one moderate hills/flats and EGT stays at an acceptable level.
Check into SCT. Wouldn't hurt to give gearhead a call and tell them what's going on. Maybe they can write a better tune if you'd be willing to switch tuners.
JJ1101 - That's quite a bit of weight, I can see why you could have a hard time maintaining a reasonable speed and keeping EGT down. What other mods and tunes do you have and how high does you trans temp get?

Studded, Banks Intercooler and Air Intake, EGR blocked off, ITP Fuel Regulated Return, Air Dog2, PowerMax Turbo, Snow Water Meth Stage 1, Updated STC Fitting, Mishimoto Radiator, Coolant Filter, Amsoil Bypass Oil Filter setup, no tuner.
No tunes anymore, I tow stock.
Have noticed the trans temps get high when pulling grades. I have seen temps as high as 220 but they cool off to about 20 degrees cooler than ECT's when back on flat land.
Never really paid attention to the fitting size of the transmission lines when I installed the Mishimoto Radiator about a year ago.
I'd love to get a fuel system like yours. I have problems with fuel pressure every once in a while it will get stuck in the 50s. Then all the sudden it will jump back up. Never had the trans temp pass the low 200s, but you are towing a lot heavier than me.
What made you go away from tunes while towing? I like the idea of a tow tune to get firmer shifting and a little different fan operation for my BPD cooler.

I never did pay for the custom tunes like I wanted. I used the SCT canned tow tune and didn't notice much of a power increase but boy did it start eating up my diesel like no tomorrow. I decided stock power levels were good enough with the upgrades I did. Now my problem is my coolant temps get too high anyway, so I can't use more power anyways. I just have to climb grades a little slower to keep them coolant temps in check.
I don't use the SCT tuner anymore, think I'm going to sell it. I did love running the performance tune but again I don't like the MPG's I get when running it. I can do without.
If anyone is interested in a slightly used SCT tuner, let me know.
I tow a fifth wheel that's around 15k lbs. I use the trans only tune on the SCT tuner. It gives the former shifts without the added power. I'm about to get my truck back from getting egr delete, new oil cooler and head studs. I will then be able to try the tow tune to see if I like the performance or just stick to stock tune.
My power and fuel economy improve when running the tunes on my Mini Maxx. Just need to control EGT and hopefully the 4" Flo Pro will do that. Coolant got a little warm towing up the pass too but the fan kicks on and it doesn't seem to go over 220.
