When I try to start it, the engine turns over like it's going to crank, but it doesn't. I usually have to try this a few times before it actually fires up. There's no clicking noise or dragging like with a battery/starter issue, it just doesn't want to start. Doesn't happen every time, but it's never happened on a cold start, it's always when I've driven it a ways, kill it, then get back in it to start it again.
To me "crank" means the starter has engaged the flex plate and is rotating the engine.
"Turn over" to me means exactly the same thing.
Crank and turn over are interchangeable words used to describe the exact same thing.
"Fired up" means it has started. Cranking or turning the engine over is what you do in the process of starting the engine.
If it doesn't crank or doesn't turn over the starter has not engaged the the flex plate.
I am still fuzzy on exactly what you mean but I am guessing that the starter is engaging and the engine is rotating but not actually starting. See my above post for likely culprits and the remedy.
"My car won't crank", means engine won't start down south, and causes confusion everywhere else because to most people engine cranking = engine turning over.

I forget sometimes that there's a language barrier that exists between us in the south and our brothers in the north, thanks for helping Tedster.
So, to help clarify, and not to flog a dead horse but I'm afraid of getting stranded somewhere so it needs to be fixed. When I turn the key, the engine rotates and the starter engages the flywheel, but the engine does not actually start running. I have to do this a couple of times before it actually busts off (a term my dad used often) and starts running. As I said before, batteries aren't dragging like they're bad and the starter is doing its job, it just doesn't want to crank. I mean fire up. Or whatever.

Sounds like it's not seeing the pressure to fire the injectors until you crank it long enough to rebuild pressure. As suggested start by changing the oil.
