LOL just can't admit you're wrong when I get the half indicator warning, or I'll check it I add two and a half gallons there's always a little left I throw it away. Also because I know my driving conditions 4300 miles I need two and a half gallons, as I stated my dealer is recommending that to stop the continuing issue with customers computers not resetting themselves have a nice one. Now if you're just a Weekend Warriors and you don't drive the truck like my neighbor across the way who just plows with a Platinum lol and it sits there all summer and winter if there's no snow I would probably let the countdown happen then again if your cash chucker and money has no meaning you could just replace the tank when it gets contaminated the fluid does have a shelf life that we all agree on take care
I thought I would do a final update on my F.I.L's truck. The truck is back home after being at the dealers for two months due to parts availability. When truck was dropped off, I instructed my F.I.L. to make sure the dealer returned all old parts so we could take a look at them. The tank is definitely contaminated with what smells like diesel fuel.
Who,when where the fuel was added is still a mystery, It had to be my F.I.L. He is 75 and mentally sharp so it is hard to believe, but facts are facts. The cost of repair was $2700 and was an expensive lesson to learn.
I would like to thank all that offered advice and training on the DEF system. We will allow the system to tell us when to add from now on.
Sorry about the expensive repair don't be afraid to fill it at half a tank as suggested in the video I posted. Also as I stated earlier I put a lock on that someone's out to get him or where he parked it there a lot of jealous people in the world and they will do anything just to give you a problem. Even if it's just kids messing around it would be very hard to get a diesel nozzle in that tank some one did it . Now I hate to scare you but watch what happens if they put DEF in the fuel tank, do a Google search you'll have a heart attack $12,000 worth of damage it's becoming a big thing in Upstate New York to people's diesel trucks they just suck up here take care
I really wish there was a locking cap set that was keyed the same for fuel and DEF. I would jump all over that for my F.I.L. He will not add a lock to the door because he will not believe that people would do that to someone else s property. I would like to think he is right but now days who knows.
Yes it's a sad statement on morality and The Human Condition these days. When I put mine in my mechanic laughed at me, at first then after a few months people started trickling into the dealership with strange fuel problems all kinds of debris including sand plastic soda tops the actual Rubber seal underneath the soda cap wonder how that got in there just enough to plug it up drove him crazy on one truck for 3 months trying to find it. Needless to say he went out and drilled a hole in the side of his fuel door to protect his fuel system. It's like I said it's not going to keep them out but I'll know they were there and that's all that I'm concerned with you can't stop vandalism but at least you'll know if they'd screwed with it, as a matter of fact I'm seriously thinking about seeing my car audio buddy and wiring an alarm to the lock to go off if they start to play with it take care
PS i would also like to think he is right so sorry for your trouble

Quite hilarious, I have never heard any issues popping up because someone tops off their def tank lol. A quick google search also yields us like zero topics about such, meaning you are the wrong one. If it snows where you live in the winter, then running your def tank near empty before refilling is almost guaranteeing to mess your system up. EVEN if topping it off could cause a problem, it is probably super rare, to the point where its left out of the owners manual and not talked about anywhere simply because the effects of letting moisture into your tank by doing so has a far greater chance of causing issues.
