51 bed assembly

Hi

Just in the process of assembling a reproduction bed for 51 F1 short box and have a couple of questions:

- does the rear cross member get spot welded to the rear stake pockets? It's not clear where/how this was done on my old box.

- does anyone know of a diagram showing positioning of cross members and the use of the various attachment points to the bed sides? I know I saw something somewhere in the past. There are 8 holes punched along the horizontal flange of the bed side on each side and I'm thinking that some can be closed for a cleaner look, but don't know which:
= I know 2 are for the center cross members
= there's one at each end that secure the box and wood to the front and rear cross members.
= over the weekend, I discovered that the rear fender support bracket attaches to a separate hole next to the rear-center cross member.
= that leaves 3 holes on each bed side that could be plugged (and save me from buying stainless bolts ). Am I missing something obvious with these 3 holes?

- Does anyone know of a thread that talks about cleaning up the bed assembly with respect to hiding bolts that would have otherwise been drilled thru the bed wood?

thanks

Jeff

Yes, the rear X member gets welded to the stake pockets.

The bolts along the bottom of the bed sides support the edges of the boards tight so they don't warp. One towards the back also secures the fender brace. Bolts are pretty cheap.

I installed my bed without bolts thru the wood.....I bolted the X members directly to the frame. Been like that for years, no problems.

I would not leave out the bolts on any of the holes as the entire box structure has some interdependencies that provide for rigidity. Those bolts along the side of the floor keep the box sides from bowing out under stress.

As for the rear cross-members as Scott says it is welded to the stake pockets. My truck's box was pretty badly butchered up but here is a picture before repair. That corner is a weak spot. I added a 16ga patch that reinforced it nicely. Just make sure that everything is square before welding. A good front panel will help that squareness in the rear.
