Using Oil Between Changes

Ever since I've had this truck it's used about 1-2 qts between oil changes. There's no smoke and I have not noticed any leaks. Just wondering if this is normal or if I should be checking some o-rings or something somewhere. Typical oil change for me is usually between 8000-10000 miles

I say that's normal some oils tend to "dissaper" between oil changes, specially because your doing oil changes at 8-10 try 5k oil changes.

What weight and brand are you using? Are you towing heavy or is this just normal driving?

If you are towing heavy that is not too bad. If this is normal driving, then from my experience, it is on the high side.

The truck in my sig uses about 1/4 of a quart every 5k and most of that time it has something heavy in the bed or heavier behind it.

Injector o-rings solved my oil usage problem. Prior to them it was a quart or two every 5k depending on how heavy I was towing and the mileage on the oil when I was towing heavy. Is your fuel filter black? Mine was.

I use rotella t6 synthetic and I don't tow anything heavy very much. Maybe once or twice a year. I do tow my sxs around more than but I wouldn't consider that a heavy load. I don't have to drive very far for work so it usually takes about a year or a little less between oil changes. Come to think of it last time I changed my fuel filter I do remember it being black. I'll look into the injector o-rings

In that case:

Alliant Injector O-rings - Ford 7.3L Powerstroke (94-03)

Alliant only or you'll be doing it again in about 5k miles. Best price for everything you'll need including the copper washer.

Ok one quick question and it might be a stupid one. I checked my fuel filter today and the outside screen is black as night. I drained the fuel out of the bowl but didn't see any oil in the fuel itself. I'm assuming that the filter media soaked up what oil got in there. Does that sound about right?

I have 90,000 miles on my 2000 F350. I dont tow that much and I use Rotella T6. I use about 1 quart for every 5,000 miles. I change the oil every 5,000 miles. I was told because of the 4:10 gears and the higher RPMs that is would use more oil. The truck does not smoke and the fuel filter looked clean last time, so I will chalk it up to normal usage.

Different oils burn more than others, in my case on my obs (bad engine) I can go as much as a gallon in 5k but when I combine towing and hauling crap my usage goes down to maybe 2.5-3 qts. My theory is that as the engine is being worked hard the piston rings that are bad expand more with heat and let's less oil get past the bad rings.

I'm going to give you some differing advice.....

1-2 quarts of oil usage, especially with such a high oil change interval, is completely normal. In fact, it's very good and many others would be using more oil than that at such long intervals. Don't waste time trying to tear things apart because you won't be fixing anything.

Also you may want to consider knocking down the oil change interval a bit. HEUI systems are unique in how they are harder on oil than most other engines. Even with oil sample tests and bypass filtration, it's still putting your motor at risk, particularly the injectors. The 7.3L injector life-span can decrease significantly as oil degrades.

Anyway, just my 2 cents.

Did the filter have oil? Should be pretty easy to check.

Filters can come out pretty dark with just straight diesel fuel only and no oil.

Make a heading labeled FWIW, and under that, put this:

I don't use oil. Period. Over 300K miles, and every oil change (5K miles) with all kinds of different oils (including T6) has the oil level right where I left it on oil change day - except when I have an injector seal problem. I have a reputation for injectors working loose, so I have an inordinate amount of experience with failed injector seals.

I am also obsessive about not letting my driveway get stained, so I immediately address any leak if it were to show up.
