I'm preparing our Truck for a Florida to Alaska road trip. We'll be towing a 8k + Arctic Fox Travel Trailer. I've just ordered a new Rear Mag-Hy-Tech Diff Cover and Transmission Pan. The Diff Cover holds an additional 2 quarts of fluid. I've used one in the past and know it's worth every cent when you're towing.
The Transmission Pan holds additional 2 1/2 quarts of fluid for extra Cooling.
I've never used one of these. Has anyone ?
Is it worth it ?
Your rig came from the factory with a good rear diff aluminum finned cover that held the proper amount of oil. I don't think that the extra capacity of the Mag-Hy-Tech cover is really doing anything for you, maybe it could extend the change cycle but most guys who care enough about their rigs to have this discussion are already changing it early. Not trying rain on your parade or dispute your experience based opinion, I'm cool with differing points of view and opinions (and it's not my truck or money ). But I do run an oil temp sender and stand alone gauge for my rear diff oil. My EX has the '08+ finned OEM cover and Mobil 1 75W-140 lube which is rated up to 340' degrees if I recall my earlier research correctly. Pretty much all of my wagon's miles these days are logged towing our 11,000lb TT all over the East and the highest temp I've seen is 225. I've had the gauge for 3+ years and we tow 3 to 5 k miles a year.
As far as the bigger trans pan our resident trans expert @Mark Kovalsky has stated that the air under and around the trans pan is hotter than the cooler outlet so the pan doesn't aid in cooling at all and the additional fluid is also of limited value. Ford spent a lot of time and money sorting all of this out prior to production.
Oh, and I'm very envious of your FL to AK trip, that seems like a great adventure! How long do you plan to on the road?
Starting in '08 the PSD-equipped trucks got the aluminum finned cover. I believe in 2012 or 2013 all SRW trucks went to stamped steel. Gas trucks never left the factory with aluminum diff covers.

A deeper transmission pan doesn't do a single thing except add 2.5 quarts of fluid. It doesn't help it cool, it doesn't keep the fluid cooler, it doesn't do a darn thing worth the money.
I have had Dodge, Cummins trucks for the last 15+ years. An 97, 05 and 12. The Dodge community really likes the mag hytec stuff and is real popular with them. I had them on all my trucks. The extra oil does help with cooling. The more oil the more BTUs it takes to heat it. Would you notice the difference? Probably not. But why do the diesel trucks all take 3+ gallons of oil when the same size gas engine take 1.5 gallons or less? It's for cooling.
You bought high quality parts that will look good and add some help with cooling. It is your money, you bought what you wanted. As long as you are happy with them that is all that matters.

All it does is take longer for more oil to get hot. It doesn't cool the oil.
