Stuck distributor

Today i decided to replace the distributor on my 80 f150 custom with a 4.9 l6. I remove the dist cap marked the rotor direction also marked the vacum advance direction. Removed the dist hold down bolt. Pulled up on the dist and it wouldnt budge. Wouldnt turn. Never had this problem before on any engine. So, since i was replaceing i decided to get a bit more firm with it. I pryed it up with a prybar about an inch or so until i could turn it. Finally came loose with lots of twisting and pulling. The walls of the shaft hole seems to be covered with a dirty sticky coating from oil over the years. The new dist will not slide in untill i clean the stuff off. Im kind of worried about the condition of the motor now.

I got to ask why replace the distributor?

That sticky stuff is normal on an old moror. Use carb cleaner to wash it off so the new distributor will slip in & turn.

How many miles on the motor and when the oil is changed how dirty is it?

Heya Dave. Im replaceing the distributor because of rough ideling. Replaced wires plugs etc. The original dist looked like it was worn out. Shaft has lots of side to side movement (not normal). A tiny bit of vertical movement (normal). And was all rusted and freaking nasty looking. Not sure about mileage. Must be a lot tho for having that much sticky grime in it. I changed the oil after i got the truck and didnt appear to have anything noticeable or feely in it. Next thing will be the one barrel carb. It's pretty nasty too so ill remove it clean it up n put a kit in it. Hopefully it will run better. I'll try and send a cpl pics. Charles
