Hey guys...been working on my 2005 Excursion's rear wheel houses. the factory used a heavy textured undercoating that has gotten ugly on the flat area visible standing next to the truck. Too many touch-ups, etc have made a blotchy, thick mess.
With a heat gun and a plastic paint scraper, I've been able to remove all the undercoating on this flat area, but now have an "edge". I'm trying to find a way to "taper" or feather the area so that when I reapply the undercoating...it won't be an obvious edge.
I know, I know...remove it all...but there's no reason to remove the rest and it would a surmountable task.
I tried heating it a bit more then trying to smooth the edge...but it didn't work well for obvious reasons with plastic tools. I'm avoiding metal tools that might cut through the paint underneath...
Feather it the same way you would feather paint. Just need to figure out what grit sandpaper to start with maybe start with some 120 then drop to 180, I doubt you would need to go to 220 on undercoat but maybe. it may take some trail and error.
Why not tape off the old, salvageable part and give the re-treat area a light coat or two to bring it up flush? Then remove tape and re-coat the entire wheel well for a uniform appearance and texture.
