Beginner timing help?

Got my truck running again, but not running well. Running really rich, idle mixture screw all the way in. Rebuilt carb, replaced vacuum lines. Holley 670 truck avenger.

Are there good resources for learning about timing? One issue I've run into is when adjusting the dizzys rotation is blocked by the thermostat housing. Maybe it doesn't need to be rotated that far, but I'm just trying to find that sweet spot when it runs smooth.

I want my truck to run well, but I'm not sure how to make that happen

You'll need a timing light to be sure. Sometimes, if the body of the distributor or say the vacuum advance can is hitting something, that indicates the distributor was installed incorrectly.

I know at some point during that era idle mixture screws were "smogified" and work backwards, but generally idle mixture screws get leaner as they are turned inward.

Here is a timing "how to" video from Frieburger. I am sure there are other good ones out there as well.

It would be a really good idea to get a service manual for your truck also.

As far as the carb, rich with screws in sounds like there is some issue inside the carb. I do not know the 670 Truck Avenger so no specific suggestions.

If you are running rich with the idle screws all the way in you should address that first. Looking at the pics of that carb on Summit there are adjustment screws in the primary metering block, are those adjusted properly? Is the float hanging up causing flooding? Is the float level correct? Just because you pull it new out of a box does not mean the carb is ready to go. It just isn't worn out.

If you have a vacuum gauge you can time the engine with that, too - it is actually a better way to go. Timing marks can shift over time, so if you time to a mark which has shifted you will not be timed right. Peak vacuum is consistent.

Agreed that a vacuum gauge and timing light are essential tools for setting the carb and timing.

Have you checked the power valve? If she's still running after the mixture screws are all the way in, that suggests a blown power valve.
