timing and carb settings

I've been trying to tune my 76 f150 with a 360. i have a holley 2bbl. i have the timing set to about 20. and the idle at about 900 rpm. I can't get it any lower because the engine runs so rough it's sounds like it's about to stall. I've played with the idle mixture and it seems like it's set pretty lean to run best. these settings don't seem quite right to me. are they? or what should I be doing?

Timing should be set around 8, depending on your altitude. Set this with the vacuum advance hose from the distributor off of the carb and plugged. Setting the carb entails screwing in the two adjusters to lightly seat and back out 1 1/2 turns (for starters to dial in later). After the motor has settled down and warmed up, you can slowly adjust the screws until you have acheived maximum manifold vacuum. Your idle should be around 500rpm for a manual and 650 for an auto, if I recall correctly.

I agree with the 8 degrees, 20 is way to much and probably why it won't idle. 900 is not idling, the carb may even be trying to to get into the off idle circuit at that speed. 1 1/2 turns on the mixture screws is a good start for the carb.

should I set the timing first or set the idle to 500 first?

Reset the timing, back down the idle speed and recheck and reset if necessary the timing because the mechanical advance could be advancing it extra above initial at you present RPM.

If you have a spring kit the mechanical advance can begin at 800 rpm's, check timing, lower idle then recheck timing and idle mix again as everything will change with rpm changes.
