Btw! What I hit with the hammer was the bolt for the balancer, not the flywheel, I wouldn't hit a fly wheel with a hammer! Haha

So hitting the balancer bolt fixed everything?
Did the crank shaft move back and if so how much do you think?

I have 1 motor (non-ford) that has a lot of end play and when I had it running ran great. It was used in my drag car.

Good to hear it is working now but for how long?

I think you're going to want that lip. It's what indexes the starter relative to the bellhousing and flywheel. The bolts provide the clamping force, but aren't really designed to control side to side motion. In the starter housing, the bolt holes are deliberately oversized to make sure there is no side load on the bolts. Without that lip to index the starter, the starter alignment could be way off and eventually tear up the ring gear if the gear teeth aren't meshing 100%.

I'm still perplexed the crankshaft shifted around like it did but with no ill effects. Glad you got it going, but I have to wonder if it will return. Every time you depress the clutch, that puts forward pressure on the crankshaft. I'd hate to see it bind up again on you. Then again, it could be fine and run for years without trouble.

How's the oil pressure? That's a good indicator of bearing wear, and maybe by extension the condition of the thrust faces on the #3 main bearing inserts.

I couldn't tell how much it moved, as for the starter, I'll worry about that when I get there haha the guy I bought the engine off of said he still had the starter up there, so I'm gonna go pick that up and have it as a backup.. So if it breaks and blows up it's not a big deal haha

I wouldn't let that go too long. For reasons unknown, the teeth on the easily replaceable starter generally hold up just fine to a gear mesh problem. It's the ring gear that seems to take the brunt of the abuse.

That is not a laughing matter.
"I have another starter"
The starter is *not* the problem...

Shifting crank is going to destroy everything inside.

Whoever did that rebuild doesn't know a damn thing about putting an engine together.

That's wired, I figured the starter would go first, I'll get the other one here this week and switch it out

40k miles and it has more axial play than my engine at 280,000?

Rods can only move so much.
The crank cheeks or pistons are going to rub themselves to death.

It made it 40k miles so far so he didn't too bad, something goofy could've happened to it after he took it out of the van it was in, we'll see. If it's got a problem I'll fix it when
