Starter or Solenoid, or something else?

Gents;
Odd behavior on a starting issue.

My 96 has always started reliably until a few day ago. Suddenly, it's having issues. (Battery is good, alternator is good.)

Occasionally, when you turn the key you can hear the solenoid engage, but no crank at all. Not a clicking, like when the battery is low... just the noise of the solenoid, then nothing.

crawled under the truck, checked all the bolts and wires... tapped on the starter housing a bit. Try the truck again, this time it fires right up.

Cant duplicate the issue when i want to... it just crops up occasionally.

So, my thought is just replace the starter and solenoid since they're cheap, but could there be a relay/wiring issue unique to bronco's i'm not aware of?

Thanks!

Battery cable terminals. Had the same issue. Get new terminal ends to go on teh battery. That'd be my first step.

How do you know the battery and alternator are good? Did you have them tested? If not, you don't know they are good.

Does the truck start right up again without tapping on the starter? Or it tapping on the starter the only way to get it going when it does this? If so, then you obviously need a new starter. But battery cables/terminals is a very common problem too. Don't just replace the terminals though if you have to - buy new cables.

I chased this issue in my 92 for a month. In my particular instance, the secondary positive to the solenoid ON the starter itself would work loose from its spade terminal effectively halting the electricity to the starter. I also discovered that this spade terminal was not a shielded connection. So, any crud that sprayed up at the starter would create a potential for dirt and corrosion to start at that connection. I replaced the spade terminal with an insulated version and never had the problem again. The symptoms were identical to yours. Just something you might look into.

Thanks Grey!

That's the same conclusion I came to as well. In fact, the new starters come with a different type of connection precisely because of the problems with corrosion on the spade terminals.
