BIG WIDE Boat

Hey y'all,
I'm looking into buying a new boat, and I want to know what I have to do on the truck end to make it legal. I don't want the beam of it to restrict where I can go, and I'll be trailering it everywhere I'll go. What's the most PITA state to haul 11'6" and 13', as I've not decided between a Chris Craft Catalina 34 (11'6 wide w/ trailer guide-ons) and Corsair 36 Hardtop (13' wide w/ trailer guide-ons?) I can remove them if need be, and height on the hardtop would be a height issue (14'6 on the trailer I'm spec'ing) so what do I have to do to the truck (flags, lights, signs, etc.) to pull this legally? Again I'd be pulling all around the country, is there a database or what do you guys know? Sorry if I'm in the wrong forum

For this I think you would need to consult with your DMV on what is required.

Here in Maryland I think you would need a non commercial CDL due to the over height (14') and over width. (101")

You would also need to know truck routes and low clearance locations to avoid.

This to me seems to be problematic if you want to travel all over the place.

Around here, South Dakota, you'd need a permit each time to move it. Legal width is 102" or 8'6". Legal height is 14 feet.

You would need a permit for each movement on the highways. The permit requires you have height and width declared. At 11 feet wide there is no running at night. You would need flags at the widest points.

Other states have different stipulations.

Understand that if you run into having to permit the movement of your boat, you probably can't do it yourself in many states. Between insurance requirements and not being a motor carrier, it is likely some states will not issue a permit. If they don't provide specific exemptions to boats then it'll be a matter of time before you're ticketed and a very costly tow becomes necessary.

Additionally, if your boat must be moved under permit, most states require at least one, if not two escort vehicles over 12.5'. Some at just 12'. Additionally, travel will be restricted in some states on weekends, approaching and over holidays, in inclement weather, at night, and possibly other times. Also, several states require an escort with a height pole for loads above a given height.

Depending on your state and the states you travel in, it could cost a couple grand to haul your own boat. Even more if you must use a commercial carrier.
