Travel trailer

I'm wondering how large of a travel trailer I can have before it needs its own insurance policy. Not before it ought to but how big before it needs its own by law. I know on equipment trailers anything over 4 ton capacity is required to have its own insurance. Wondering how travel trailers compare to equipment trailers on insurance requirements.

that is a hard one to pin down. It is gonna vary by state and insurance company. If you are questioning it,...then maybe it is time to go ahead and get a policy.

I think that depends on both the laws in your state and how much liability you can afford to take on in the event of an accident if you do not have insurance. Personally I can't afford to be uninsured.

Issue is it's not my trailer I'm towing it to an event put on by one of the sponsors on FTE and then not again. My buddy says no insurance needed I want to be doubly sure.

You will have to call your insurance company and see if they will cover it since the tow vehicle is yours.

Talk to your own insurance company and it wouldn't hurt to see if the owner of the trailer has any kind of insurance on the trailer itself. Don't take the owner's word for it; get the name and policy number so you can verify it; to avoid hurt feelings, you could say you were told to do so (which is true; I told you to).

Great one here! Its not what the state allows, its what can you afford.
To be insured or not be insured.

Typically if you have public liability on your tow vehicle then your trailer doesn't require any. If you have a bank loan on your trailer then the financial institution will likely require you have colision and comprehensive coverage. They want to make sure if you write the trailer off (your fault), they get paid. Even if you don't owe any money on the trailer you may want to have colision anyway depending on the value of it.

But as everyone says, it's always best to call you agent.
