Cool 2002 trans failed

so got to work today, truck engine light comes on all foward motion stops. Just coasts and idles along. I have 280k on the orig stock trans. I also have dp tuner and did the valve body upgrade along with adding the 6.0 cooler hoping to extend the life of the trans. Reverse works. So i asume I am needinf a new trans. My options are Ford HDr4100 orig 4100, Or BTS built trans. I also pull a toy hauler as well. My question is If I order the BTS can I have a my local shop install it or does it need to be programmed at the dealer. If I get the HD from ford installed will I have to remove the dp tuner chip to get it programmed and also will i need another new valve body replacement. Just looking at my options right now as i do have another vehilce to drive. thanks Jeff

You don't need to get anything programmed when you change the transmission. You can purchase any of these transmissions and have your local shop install it.

Would be nice if this site had a sticky with trusted mechanics. There are a some scammers running Transmission shops. They give honest mechanics a bad name. What about that shop in GEorgia that was featured on Poweratrokehelp

You talking for the scammer list right? Lol

I am not saying he is a scammer per se, but his help is often times not very helpful. Most of us here take a semi trailer full of salt with his "advice"

thanks, So i have been looking at the HD ford trans and the stck one, and the BTS trans. Of course money is an issue. My local shop near my house has done some other work for me and i would have it done there. I do tow a toy hauler (approx 13k ) 3-5 times a yr. I was thinking of going with the ford stock again but not sure wha the disserence is on the HD. I would have to switch out the valve body on the new one with my valve body on the bad trans after install. As long as its just a install the trans and switch the valve body that would be great. Now just whivh trans id the best choice and best price. I am not in a super rush and do have another mode of getting around. If anyone has good prices on ford trans let me know Thanks Jeff

I'm in a similar boat as you right now with my transmission on it's way out. I've had several people on my forum post "'00 f250 auto transmission replacement" recommend the ford HD4r100, as well as saying to stay away from the stock one.

How do you plan to clean it out?

It's not as simple as a swap. You put that valve body in from the bad transmission, and you could introduce contaminates that could hurt your new one. That valve body would have to be gone through by a professional.

280K miles out of the stock transmission is good. Can't complain about that at all. If you're trying to save some money, you can go back to the stock one and shoot for that kind of life out of it again.

The Ford HD is also a good replacement. I have several of my friends who have put one in, one of them runs with bigger injectors, the others run tunes. So far so good on the replacement transmissions.

I had a BTS in my old truck. Never once had an issue out of it. You pay a lot, so that's probably going to be your most expensive option.

Just my 2 cents.

I have had my BTS for about a year now and I couldn't be happier. I did the install myself, so there was no additional labor for that.

As others have said, its the higher end of the price range but it is also one nice piece. The only down side was there was about a 6 week wait list when I ordered mine. They actually gave me a build date when I first called them and it shipped out when they said it would.

My original went south at 120k and I weighed all the options from buying a new truck to going with a local rebuild. Once I actually priced them out and saw what a truck like mine was selling for used, 5k didn't seem to be a bad deal for what I was getting. The cost stung a little, but I have absoultly no regrets.

i have pretty much decided to go with just a stock ford r4100 from Auto Nation. its 2349.50 + 1000.00 core and 300 shipping. Since i did get 280 k out of the orig i am thinking about the same for this one too. Local friend will do it for 500.00 (install) I also have been having the grinding noise when i start every so often. of course when i try it a few more times it stops and grabs the teeth and starts. I am assuming a few teeth on the flywheel are shot since it is a new starter about 1 yrs ago. (ford long one). So now is the time to do the flywheel. have to put things in motion now ...... thanks Jeff

Good one, Mark!

Jeff, sounds like you are getting a good deal and for sound reasoning Be sure to use the right fluid for it.

Are you replacing the torque converter, too?

Another thing I've seen mentioned, are you planning to flush the cooler lines and cooler?

Good luck and keep us posted
