Crank/No Start 6.0 Excursion

Hi All,

I posted this in the Excursion section but posted it here in hopes for some additional help.

I have had some trouble starting my 2005 6.0 PSD Excursion recently and it happened again last night. I will provide some details as I am hoping for some guidance.

I believe that all Exs came with 2004 motors(my sticker says 2004 as well)

The Ex has 218000 miles and I have done the following work to the diesel. Two years ago I did the headgaskets, ARP studs, replaced the standpipes and dummy plugs, ICP regulator, oil cooler, HPOP pipe, injector O rings, HPOP O rings, 203 thermostat, rebuilt alternator, two new batteries, clean grounds and a 6.4 starter.

The diesel has had the EGR deleted, MBRP 4" aftermarket exhaust, has Shell Rotella coolant and runs the Tow/Haul program off of a SCT3 programmer. I use Shell 5W40 synthetic and always change the oil around the 6000 mile mark. My girl normally runs like a champ and I love driving it.

When it doesn't start I hook up a Scangauge II and check the following with KOEO: ICP, IPR, SYN, FICM volts

Results are respectively 0, 14.4, 0, 48.5

When cranking the ICP varies(but below 500 ), 28, 1, 48

I checked the codes last night as well and came up with P2614( camshaft position output circuit )and P2623(Inj control pressure regualtor circuit/open).
I also unhooked the ICP wire to see if it would start just to get it home to the shop but it made no difference. Am I looking at a HPOP?

Any help would be really appreciated as I don't trust her right now and I do not want to get stuck like this up north at the cottage.

Thanks,

Rob

Yes, it sounds like the high pressure oil side. First though, check your low oil pressure.
Remove the oil filter cap and oil filter. Crank the engine while looking into the bowl. The oil filter bowl should fill fairly quickly. If it does, do an air pressure test to check for leaks in the high pressure side. It may be the high pressure pump.

Thanks for the quick response guys.

Don-I will do a low pressure test in the morning as I have it back at the shop now and it still would not start. The ICP did crank up to 640 psi for a second and the Ex grunted a few times but it would not start.
I will look into what type of fittings I will need to do for a high pressure test.

Blade35-I can't remember if I checked the codes before or after I unplugged the IPR-it was 2:00 am when this all happened. I did erase everything and have since tried cranking so I will look in the morning if that code is set again. If it is it may be a bad wire?

Blade35-I will recheck my numbers and repost. I am going to the machine shop early to modify a 35 MM socket to be able to remove the IPR as well. I have an old one that was replaced when I first bought the Ex and had no knowledge about 6.0s and a new screen kit for it.

Im talking Location of the ICP

that will determine some of the HPO parts since I cant remember the change dates

P2623 – Injection Control Pressure Regulator Open

This has to be Troubleshot ^^it means theres no electrical signal to you IPR (Shorted wire)

I 2nd the ipr wiring if that code is there with the ipr plugged in. Looking for a broken wire, bad ipr or a bad connection, thus the open circuit code.

Finally had a chance to check things. My numbers on the scangauge are:

!CP: 100
SYN: 1
FICM 48
IPR: 78

I also took the oil filter out and looked at how quickly it filled up during cranking while holding the self drain down and it fills up quick. Can I safely say that the low pressure pump is OK?

I also modified a socket this morning to remove the IPR and I was going to do that next.

First I have to fix the kids' 2005 Escape as it has a crank/no start condition as well!!

I am ready to start waving the white surrender flag about now.

That sucks Iv been bombed by auto repair to

LPOP will call it ok for now

Post ICPV @koeo
And are you still at IPR% of 14.4 @ KOEO

Clear the P2623 and see if it returns it's continuos monitored so should return fairly fast if there a problem

The p2623 would also come up if you unplugged IPR instead of ICP or it could have been bumped

When you pull the IPR push Inside the valve with screwdriver it should move stiffly about 1/8" or if the screen is blown out or pushed up inside

IIRC should ohm out at 6 ohms

Well I got the IPR off and the screen looks fine.

Last time I checked the IPR% with KOEO it was at 14.4.

Should I put the IPR back in and can I crank the motor over if the FICM is off? If that is possible I can do a few more checks.

I also forgot to mention in my last post that my ICP is located on the passenger side valve cover. I guess that this makes my 6.0 a later 2004 engine??

Yes with standpipes and dplugs

So with that said there could be no IPR contamination when you unplugged ICP sensor

P2623 needs to be pinpoint test check it's harness is it fully seated into the valve

Can you ohm the harness

Check it from PCM for short to ground on both IPR wires

Does it change it's mind when you wiggle the IPR harness
