I had one build where the bearing clearance was within spec range, but on the tight side. I had a high volume oil pump and the pressure was so high I had to get a liquid filled OP gauge that read up to 150psi. I also had to use the Fram heavy duty filter because it would swell up the standard over the counter ones and leak. It was idling at about 75 psi and would go as high as 120 psi at higher rpm.

I had the crank ground and went loose on the clearance to solve the problem.

There is supposed to be a check valve- a pressure regulator- in any oil pump, high volume or not. It seems to me that something was wrong with that pump to give those readings. The oil pressure gauge is not supposed to act as a tach.

Now about a 1000 miles later it cranks at about 50 pounds cold, goes to about 25 or 30 pounds hot and idles at nearly zero. Couple of guys have told me its the gear worn out on the dist. causing it, that it's not compatible with the roller cam. Anyone ever heard of this?
Hmm well got my new dash cluster in and working with all electric VDO gauges. Made a test about a 10 mile test drive and my oil pressure dropped to like 10psi which is about 10-12 psi off. At first it was ok but then dropped.

I do have oil & coolant warning idiot lights if oil psi drops below 17psi and if the coolant gets up to 210 the light comes on. And none of the warning lights came on so, I know the gauge is off

My oil psi at started up has always been about 75-80psi cool motor depending on rpm it's running at. This new vdo gauge showed about 83-85psi with a cool startup. Warm idle showed 10psi.

Well todays weather was a bit warm at 94* while doing my test drive my manual SW coolant temp ga. ran at 185* but remove it so it's not installed right now just running the 12 volt coolant ga. was at 190* at 65 mph with my AC was going also. So 12v coolant temp was about right.

The VDO instructions says the gauges are with in 5%+- accuracy so bottom line is don't worry about the gauge reading or use a SW gauge
So the temp was about right.

I keyed in on the fact you just changed the oil. What Cheapo oil filter did you use? Buy a Genuine Ford Motorcraft one.

I agree with "CougarJohn" you probley never really had 80 PSI when it was new. (Unless it has a very high pressure oil pump installed). Unless you've developed some engine damage, the gauge must be messed up. I'm sure you would have noticed any new noises by now. Has the engine begun to run warmer than normal? Is it burning any oil? Any blue smoke following you?

I'm kind of discouraged with the VDO gauges now as mine have a little sticker on them made in India.

I've always used SW after market gauges since my teens yrs.
and was kind of attracted to the new white face gauges.

Plus the vdo's were at the time was the only Co. making the round 4" speedometers was white face ones. As I did not like the small 3.3/8" ones. That's okay for a tach tho.

I always though that the vdo were the top notch gauges, but now just switching over my dash cluster to an all 12volt vdo electric gauges with the oil gauge being so far off from the SW gauge binging 10lbs off at idle.

But, I know that the vdo oil gauge reads low so not going to worry about it.
