Question re:drum brakes

'96 F150 4x4. I heard metal on metal when I hit the brakes on Saturday. Front disc pads look OK. Inspected rear drums/shoes. On the drivers side, the shoes are at least 3 mm thick - probably closer to 4. On the passenger side, there is no shoe left at all, and the drum has slight grooves from the metal-on-metal situation. I know I'm looking at new shoes and drums. My question is why would one side be almost new, and the other totally gone. Is there something wrong with the drivers side rear brakes, and if so, what is the most likely culprit?

The self adjusting feature of drum brakes is not a 100% proposition. That's one possible.

Or, some slight problem with the finish on the drum, or the introduction of debris like fine sand could have accelerated the wear on that side.

I'd go with the self-adjust too. Could be they weren't installed correctly the last brake service. They need to be manually cinched up pretty tight on the initial install or they will never self adjust, ever.

You probably know this but everything pretty much has to be done in axle pairs. Even if one drum were OK, replace both, shoes are replaced in axle sets, spring kits, cylinders, etc. Inspect backing plate shoe pads for grooves.

Could also be the "good" side has a malfunctioning wheel cylinder. Look for a restriction. Maybe there's a problem with the brake hardware? Something jammed up?
