Reinstalling the turbo

Howdy. My dad has a 2000 F350 and pulled the turbo off to replace his up pipes. Apparently they were leaking. He put new ones on and now can't get the turbo back on. He said they don't seem to be lining up right. I'm over 1000 miles away so i can't see it or help him. I'm in NW WA and he is in the central coast of California.

Any tricks or advice on getting it lined up? I'm on my phone so I can't get it to use the search function. Thanks.

Tighten the PS up-pipe to the collector at full torque spec 21 ft/lbs. Leave the DS up-pipe loose at the collector. Leave both up-pipes loose at their respective manifolds. He will need approximately 3-4 feet worth of extensions. Leave the exhaust downpipe off of the turbo.

If necessary, for more room, he can leave the DS up-pipe off of the collector until he gets the turbo and collector lined up, clamped and tight. He can then install the DS up-pipe from below using a bungee cord. Also, the turbo can be left somewhat loose during this time without having to worry about damaging the two o-rings between the turbo and pedestal which will allow for an extra couple degrees of movement.

Next, find/make a couple of wooden wedges and have them under the hood close to the working area. Align the turbo and collector. Shove/drive the wedges between the firewall and the collector until they are tight enough to hold the collector/turbo together. Then the Marmon clamp can be slipped over the union and tightened.

Next, remove the wooden wedges, install the DS up-pipe if not installed or if it has been, install the exhaust downpipe to the turbo and tighten everything down to their respective torque values.

Make sure that the little locating dowel on the collector is not boogered up so that it will be able to fit into the hole on the turbo. The dormans had a history of this.

Another good idea I saw from a fellow forum member (forget who exactly) was to dry fit the collector on the turbo while everything was on the bench to make sure everything does indeed fit together as it is supposed to. He then took a sharpie and made some alignment marks on both the turbo and the collector to help make sure he had everything aligned correctly when laying over the engine trying to marry everything up.

In addition to the excellent advice above, let him know he's not alone; I fought with mine for almost 2 hours yesterday, and still not there. Walk away, enjoy a cold beverage, hit it again later. That job is a beyotch.

Easy, tighten to spec the collector to the up pipes, then make sure you align the up pipes to the exhaust manifolds putting the bolts and nuts hand thight so they wont loose their location(this is the most important thing for ease of installation) from there put the clamp that holds turbo to collector over the collector like this

align the turbo to collector make sure the nipple goes all the way in into the collector,

Install the ebpv if he still has it. Put the turbo to pedestal bolts tighten to spec, then go and tighten the manifold to up pipes bolts. And your done.
