Junkyard treasure

Hey guys. I picked up an Edelbrock Performer 400 and a Holley 600 cfm carb 1850-3 for $125.00. I got the intake to hopefully help with the vapor locking I've been dealing with for a while now. Looked for a phelonic spacer for the 2 barrel carb without luck, and got the Edelbrock intake and Holley 4 barrel, and going to get a phelonic carb spacer to use with the Holley. I've included some pics of them. It looks like the Holley is complete, but not sure. If anyone has any opinions on carbs I should use, please chime in. I'm really in hopes this will increase the driveability on my truck. Thanks.

Looks like you got a good deal.
I'd stay with the Holley, I'd also plan on having to rebuild it. Don't know if you've got a manual or automatic but I don't see the kickdown arm. Not a biggie though. C6's don't have to have the linkage hooked up. It's also a manual choke.

Thank you Mike. You're always so helpful and quick to chime in. I do have a manual transmission, and I've not used a manual choke before, besides lawnmowers that is.

My mechanical choke has never really worked that well anyway, so I'm in hopes this intake and carb will improve things a lot, especially the vapor locking.

I use the same intake and carb on my 400 with a 1/2 spacer. Not only did my gas mileage improve but it noticeably runs better. The carb I'm using is probably the worst one I've ever tore apart and am using successfully. It was so crusty like oxidation rather than varnish inside I thought it would never work. If mine works that one will too.

Thank you. Do you happen to have a photo of how it looks on your engine? So you use the manual choke as well?

Actually I do not but can take one tomorrow. My intake looks like new actually just because my buddy took it to work and glass beaded it. I don't have much in mine I gave him $50 for it and got the carb for free. I think the rebuild kit I used was $30 or so plus the intake valley pan gasket set which was around the same price. I do not use a manual choke. This one had a electric one on it that actually works so I'm using it otherwise I have a few other carbs that I coulda took a manual choke off of.

Nice, I'd like to see how it looks. I was wondering about glass beading mine as well. I'll have to see who has one around here. That was my next question about the valley pan and gasket. I figured I'd have to get a different one. Thanks.

Here is a 2bbl phenolic spacer that fits a 2150 motorcraft.

Note that you will need to block the EGR port in some manner before using it with a manifold equipped with such.

Canton Racing Carburetor Spacers 85-040 - Free Shipping on Orders Over $99 at Summit Racing

price has come way down on this...i think i just paid like $70 for it a couple months ago.

Here's mine...not much to look at but so much better than what was on it. It's been on maybe 2 months roughly and is already starting to get that used look.

This pic reminds me I'm missing a hose clamp....whoops

Nice find! If you do blast that manifold put a coat of paint or clear on it or it will look like s#%^ in short order. Same for a new one.

Took the manifold to a shop where they bead blasted it. Came out looking rather nice. I then put a couple coats of silver engine enamel spray paint. The guy at the shop said he'd done something similar, and said the paint has held up very well. Looks a lot better than what I started with.

Couple of questions. Will the stock intake bolts work with this manifold, or do I need to get some new ones? Someone earlier said something about an EGR blocking plate. I don't plan to use my EGR spacer that was used with the 2150 stock carburetor with the Holley and Edelbrock, so is there anything in particular I need to do with the EGR components? Thanks as always.

Insulate your fuel line from the fuel pump to the carb. I suggest something from cool it - thermotech. That and your carb spacer should all but eliminate your vapor lock issue.

I sure hope so. Can't trust to drive the truck anywhere for fear of breaking down in traffic somewhere.
