My project `86 F250 was a basket case when picked up last December. Not running with C6 in bed of truck. Since then I managed to get the motor running very well. I rebuilt the transmission with some great support from the Ford transmission forum. Finally got everything back together and truck in now on the road with just over 60 miles trouble free.
I realized immediately how desperately this truck needs overdrive. Now for my inquiry.
I have an E4OD still attached to a `94 460. Its 4WD, but I also have another E4OD 2wd parts donor. I believe without too much modifying this transmission will bolt to the 6.9. How much trouble is it going to be to wire up an electronic module and make this work?
What did the 7.3 IDI motor use for electronic control to transmission? Or am I limited to an aftermarket controller like Baumann??
89' was the first year for the E4OD in these trucks, so for 88' the 7.3 had the C6. So, anything after 88' was the E4Od
As far as what tranny to use, I'd put an aftermarket OD on the C6 because its one of the stoutest transmissions to be put in a light truck, and they're relatively cheap and simple.
I don't think the bellhousing pattern is the same between the gas and diesel e4od, unless the 460 one is different than the other gassers. You will need a stand alone controller for the e4od (unless you want to pull all the stock stuff from a donor truck). Not sure about the shift linkage or steering column compatability.
Then there are the needed sensor inputs and flywheel issues.
I currently have a c6 with a DNE2 auxilary overdrive. I have looked into an e4od swap in a way to still make use of the DNE2. Depending on how you use the truck and e4od swap could be a benefit. There is also a zf5 swap if you want overdrive and dont mind a manual. It is simpler than an e4od swap.
Bellhousing bolt up patterns are different. Generally the 460 Bellhousing will mate up but you need to drill new holes to bolt it. Computer wise i imagine if you can get one from another IDI it would probably work
