Crush washer on rear brake hose?

Greetings All, I'm new to this board and am working to get a recent purchase running again after 30 years, a '65 F100 shortbed with 352 and 3 speed.

In doing some brake work, I've discovered a leak from the rear brake hose where it meets the distribution block on the rear axle. It looks like a crush washer is called for because of some indentions/grooves on the block where the hose attaches. I don't have one and am suspicious that's the cause of the leak. I went to Autozone and they looked at me with a confused gaze when I asked for crush washers.

Does the hose in fact require a crush washer, and where is a good place to buy them?

Thanks much!

I think any of the usual suspects will have them. DC, Summit, Jegs, Speedway. Even Mac's. Although they are usually included with the brake hose itself. You should try a local brake shop, I bet they'd give you one.

Welcome to FTE btw

My 66 2WD (4WD is probably different) had copper washers for the front wheel cylinders where the hose attaches. Carquest or Advance Auto had them in a bin behind the counter for a few cents each. Dorman also makes a package of assorted copper washers for brake applications for about 4 dollars and change. Just tell them you want copper washers for a brake application and pick out the right size from their assortment if they have em.

On my 1966 2WD there were no washers where the rear brake line meets the rear brake hose. That distribution block you speak of is actually part of the hose on the 66 (if I understand you correctly) so no copper washers in the rear since all connections are to the compression fitting on the brake line. Your 1965 is probably different though and the dist. block may be separate from the hose. If the connections are made with a fitting like this then no washer is used:

FYI, none of my brake hoses came with washers. Only the wheel cylinders came with washers.

34808-s ""banjo " bolt holds the junction block in place and also serves as a vent for the rear axle. You want to make sure the vent and hose are clear.

Pic in post #5: The vent is 4022 .. it fits thru a hole in the rear brake hose block, then threads into the rear axle housing.

34808-S is a 7/16" lock washer.

Thanks all for the help. I can tell FTE is going to be an excellent resource. I was happy to find a NAPA open today (on a Sunday) and even happier to find they had an assortment of crush washers. I would have thought they'd include that with the new hose, but I don't recall seeing one. Definitely had copper washers with the new front, but can't remember if they came with the hoses or the wheel cylinders.

GLR, I inspected and cleaned the axle vent/banjo bolt. It should not be obstructed, correct? Mine shows solid blockage, looks like it's metallic and part of the casting. What's the purpose of the axle vent anyway? If it's supposed to be an unobstructed tube, looks like I'll have to buy another one.

The vent relieves pressure build up in the rear end. Otherwise a plugged vent might cause rear end oil leakage. Usually at the axles and on to the brakes. It's a pretty small hole, also make sure the rubber hose is clear.

I bought some new hose but I can't see any daylight through the bolt. Tried running a screw through it to dislodge any gunk, and it's solid. GLR, you said the hole is small, is it smaller than the inside diameter of the metal tube?

4022 in the illustrations. That bolt should be hollow where it threads into the rear axle. The end where the hose goes over has a small opening about 1/16 to 1/8"
