We have a 2005 Escape Hybrid with 317,000 miles on it. It gave a "service emissions " warning yesterday. The dealer says its a bad EGR value. They want $325 to replace it. Is this an easy DIY fix? Does any one have instructions. I tried searching but didnt find any good results.
It is possible that the EGR valve is plugged up with carbon deposits, and the diaphragm unable to move the sticking valve. In that case, the computer thinks the valve is not responding to commands, and throws a flag.
You can take the valve off by disconnecting the electrical, intake manifold fasteners, and tube fitting. When you go to put it back, start the tube threads first so you can move the EGR around to get the threads on straight without worrying about cross-threading. Manipulate the valve until the threads start several turns BY HAND, and then move the valve into position on the intake manifold. Tighten the fitting and the fasteners.
If you remove it, look inside the port that leads to the intake. You might find a lot of carbon, and a stuck valve. The other failure modes are a leaky diaphragm, or bad variable resistor that reports 'position' based on varying resistance changed by valve pintle movement. As the valve opens, the pintle moves, and that moves the resistor sweep to change resistance, reported to ECM.
