Hey guys I usually spend most of my time in the 87-97 truck forum, but the wife and I are looking to get an expedition. We like the 2003-2006 model. Anything we should know/look for? Reliable? Etc..
I'm not afraid to work on my own cars so if there are little things that go wrong I can fix them myself.
Thanks guys!
I have a '06 Navigator that I bought earlier this year with 110,000 miles. I now have 115,000 miles. (I flew to Fla and drove it back)
Besides the spark plugs which are difficult to remove, the truck has been a dream. I did buy the Lisle spark plug remover because I broke some plugs in the removeal process. I have serviced everything (fluids, filters, spark plugs and belt) except the transmission and that is happening in the next 30 days. I do all of my own work.
It runs like a charm and my 4X2 Navigator Limited has every option and everything works!
I read with amazement of all of the repairs and issues as I have not had any problems. However I am very EZ on al of my rides (7 cars and 2 trucks) and they are well cared for.

Thanks man, I have a lead on a 2005 with 106k on it probably gonna take a look at soon
I'm also looking for the same model years expedition but have a couple of concerns. First is are transmission issues common? Second is fuel economy - what can I expect? I already anticipate replacing driver seat upholstery and radio (for a backup camera).
I have a 2006 Navigator Limited that has been averaging 17.2 MPG since March of this year or the last 4000 miles.
I don't have much experience and would say transmission issues are not common.

Navigators and expedition have different transmission in 05-06 , you have a 6 speed and expedition has 4 speed.
As reliability I would go with an 03-04 expedition or navigator because you don't have the cam phaser or dreadful sparkplug but of course you miss out on power and a bit on fuel economy.
we had my wife in an 04 expedition for a few years and it was an awesome vehicle, extremely reliable. bought it with 118k on the clock and think we put just shy of 30k on it ourselves. i did brakes and a brake booster on it, and had to fix a window switch, but that's all it ever asked for. but, around down it got 12mpg on a good day, the rockers completely rusted away under the vehicle (couldn't see them unless you crawled under it) and the rear door had some cancer that was spreading pretty quickly.
You don't buy an Expedition with any expectation to fuel economy.. 11-12 mpg is about what you get, perhaps more when cruising down the highway. As for stuff to look for, listen for knocking in the engine. Cam phasers and VCT solenoids are a weak point on these, most noticeable on the passenger side. Replacing them means usually to replace all the timing components. Spark plugs is another thing, if it hasn't been done before, then expect them to break. There are special extractor tools available for about 70 bucks on Amazon, so in 99% of the cases you don't have to pull the heads.
