Well its time now that I got the updated radio head unit in, to start looking at replacing the speakers as well they are the originals and they are starting to suck and with the updated system making that evident....you guys know where this is headed I bet......I need to see a doctor I think...I got the PMS!!!! anyways I am figureing the door speakers are 6x8 but have yet to pull any door trim, so I do have some questions...
How hard is it to pull the trim, and while behind the trim is there ANYTHING else I should hit while back there, I would like to go behind one time and get this all done at once if able, if the speakers are NOT 6x8 what size are they? also I know the next bit is subjective but what brands should I consider and what brands should I just stay away from like the plegue due to quality issues...figure it all comes out of China the land of the mass flood of the market...so there is bound to be horrer stories...so yea please help and let the good times begin...errrr rock on!
My music is a wide mix of songs, and I would love to replicate what the mustang has in it as thats one heck of a sound system for a factory set up...and below is a list of what I believe the sizes to be based on location...if im incorrect PLEASE let me know before I throw money and parts at this....wait....this is SOMETHING I want to throw money and parts at....just help me do it correctly!!!
Front: 6" x 8"
Rear: 6" x 8", 6" x 8"
Front door: 6" x 8"
Back door: 6" x 8"
Rear side panel: 6" x 8"

Door panels are easily removed. There are several screws which hold the panel in place. they are LIFTED to be removed.
Specifically, the screws are under the window switch panel and behind the courtesy light lens . . .
I don't have courtacy lights in my doors, this is a plain jane bone stock work truck

Nice, how well do they handle highs and lows? mids? my music has quite a bit in the mid to low (if wanted I can put up some sampleing of music I listen to if you guys want me to)
I didn't think they were 6 x 8, but I don't remember what they are.
I went with what wally world had on the shelf when I changed mine and those blew away what the factory speakers sounded like. So basically anything you come up with will be better sounding.
The door panels come off in under 30 seconds when you are familiar with how to do it.
Since you don't have a courtesy light, I would look for another screw down toward the bottom of the panel, there might not be one though. After that, be sure you have disconnected the plugs for the window and door locks then they lift straight up.
Here is a sample list of what I listen to, nothing special. I do want to try and get the 4 door speakers, maybe a sub and an amp (ONLY if it is needed)

Then there should be a screw behind the reflector that should be in the same exact place a courtesy light would have been if it was a courtesy light instead of a reflector.

ok if I get the chance I will look tomorrow if the rain has stopped by then, do you have any other brand recomendations? should i look into a sub of sorts or an amp? I am looking to round the music out NOT to be like kids that drive around rattleing there cars to pieces looking like douche bags in the process...
Pickachu beat me to the reflector line, same on mine. There is a rubber piece at the front of the door that is referred to the 'sail' as it looks like a sailboat sail. It just yanks straight off, you'll need to yank that off as part of the process. Panel is off in no time.
Before I pull the door panels and all this other stuff are there any special adapters that I may need to buy for my new speakers? Crutchfield seems to indicate I may be needing some...and if so can I get them at any parts house?
The Kenwoods have a warm sound tho all that equalization is controllable with the head units these days. Not giant bass but certainly fine for my taste, not running a sub. As I recall it was plug and play, no wiring adapters. As someone said, most aftermarket speakers are an upgrade over stock.
You have an OE 6 disc changer, right? If it starts acting up get all your discs out while you can.

mine was single disk, and I have that safely in the house now that I have a media player (digital system), if you need a replacement unit I can send you either one I have, I have both tape (black one) and the CD player (silver)
I have had pioneer, kenwood, morel, infinity and memphis speakers and by far my favorite are memphis.
I have the Ford component speaker set with a circular mid range and seperate tweeter that is mounted in the door. The crossover fits perfectly right below the arm pad on the door. Unamplified the speakers sound outstanding both at high volume and low volume with a reasonable amount of mid range and warmer highs. Maybe eventually I will amplify them but I don't want to run the speaker wire for that. I only have the two front speakers replaced as well.
