Hey everyone. I am having a hard time using the search function to locate aservice chapter on removing the heads on a 2002 7.3. I have a guy that needshis heads rebuilt but wanted to read up on the proper removal procedure beforediving into this. I will be doing it with the cab on. I have pulled several 6.0heads (cab off) for studs but not 7.3's. It looks like there is plenty of roomto pull them. He chose to go back with stock bolts as well which brings me toanother question. Do I need new head bolts? I know the 6.0 in mandatory but isthe 7.3 a yield bolt Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!!!
The argument could be made either way. If the only work that's being done is the heads, I'd probably leave it in frame. If there were other things that needed to be taken care of, but maybe weren't critical like a slight oil leak from the pan or front cover, I'd probably pull it and take care of all of it at once.
Thank you all so much especially (pirsch fire wagon) it's a customers truck and that's all he wants to do so I'm trying to do it the easiest and quickest way. If it were mine the cab would be in the air studs would be going in and the engine would be out. I will use a hoist. Does anyone have a template of the lifting tool or the head mounting holes
That's why I wanted to ask cause I noticed they were not TTY but the parts shop here told me I needed them and I couldn't figure out why but I will be pulling them off tomorrow so if there are some that have any rust or damage I will just get a new set. It eats at me not installing studs. I guess there is no need it's going to just be a daily driver for a senior. I'm pulling them cause if the truck sits for a while it will smoke pretty bad until it worms up or if I let off after a hard run it will smoke also.
All of the glow plug system is new as well. They were replaced with the injectors a few months ago. It's white and if it sits a while it's ALOT of smoke
What does the exhaust smell like, raw fuel or coolant? Have you checked for combustion gasses in the coolant? Any coolant loss? Compression seems OK, depending on your altitude. If you could narrow it down to a specific cylinder with an injector breakout box, or by disconnecting on injector at a time, it might save you some work.
The exhaust smells like burnt oil and when it stops smoking it smells normal not fuel and has no smell of coolant. The coolant seems good I haven't checked for gasses tho but I'm not loosing any. Here are some pics of the valve seats
