I put a remanufactured dist. on my '41, 1.5 ton V-8 and its making noise. It only has a half hour of running on it, and it was silent, but now its making a sound. I did the wooden dowell up to my ear trick and its definately coming from the dist.
Any ideas? Anybody else ever have a noisy dist.? A bad bearing or bushing? Something wrong with the rotor or the whole rotating assembly? What should I look for first? Maybe I'll get to look at it tomorrow a little bit.
Needless to say, I'm really disappointed knowing I have to tear this all apart again for some reason. I just can't do anything once anymore and it's getting depressing.
I started it again today to see if it would make the sound when it was cold vs. at operating temperature. It was silent for a couple minutes of idling and the first time I idled it up the noise appeared. So hot or cold doesn't make a difference with it.
Owned a lot of v8s but never a distributor older than a 42. Just looking at those helmet types gives me the *******. If the dizzy is front drive, it's a crab, otherwise I go 8ba. I truly feel your pain. Wish I could be of some help, but I guess you gatta send it back.
Never a problem before replacement? Better it's the distributor itself and not something internal. The item has some kind of warranty, no? You familiar with "GMC Bubba"? Runs a shop and does a lot of rebuilding, might have some insight or things to check. Check that all the measurements are correct in terms of clearances and bushing or shaft runout?
Had a problem with a later type replacement distributor cap once. It didn't seem to fit very well and was real tight. Didn't make any noise but it didn't seem to run as well either. Should send it back but after shipping it would be a wash.
Must be something between the breaker point mounting plate and the rear of the dist.? Everything else looks like it's rotating correctly and freely. Something must have moved or is loose somewhere??
Yeah, I'll have to call tomorrow and see what they'll do. It came from Mac's Auto Parts. Anybody have any preference on dist. suppliers? Any better than the others? I guess I should have asked this question before I started taking the first dist. off. And maybe I should have ate the core charge and kept the old one...
Faron Rhoads is another guy have heard good things about. Not sure if he works on stuff that far back. He's a Ford guy in PA. Bubba's Ignition is Indiana, he hangs out over at the H.A.M.B. but has a website.
Bubba refurbished my dizzy and did a very nice job. I bet if you gave him a call he could point you in the right direction. Don't have his contact info in front of me but you can just google Bubbas Ignition. Hope you get it worked out.
Get in touch with Charlie Schwendler. You can research him as "Charlie ny" on the "Early V-8" forum of the FordBarn. Orchard Park, NY (716) 662-9159; Cas5845@yahoo.com. He will set up your distributor, rebuild your carb and fuel pump with ethanol resistant materials, rebuild your 3-speed trans, etc. Great guy to talk and deal with. Full disclosure: he's a fellow member of the Western NY Region chapter of the Early Ford V-8 Club.
Okay, I tightened the vacuum brake adjustment as Fred suggested and it's quiet now! Thanks Fred!
I hav'nt driven it yet to see how it runs under load. I can say that it doesn't idle as smoothly as it should- seems too rich- but I've played with the idle screws and that doesn't seem to help it any. But I'll call today a success because the dist. noise stopped!
