Injection pump tuning problem

Injection pump tuning problem

so, I recently traded my ford ranger for an F-250. Its a 92' F-250 XL, RCLB, 7.3l, E4OD, manual locking D50 TTB, manual TC.... not a bad truck with 230,000km. It blows smoke under anything more then half throttle. I was told the pump was turned up, which bothers me. I managed to get a hold of the previous owner, the one before the one I got it off of. When asked how much he turned it up, he said, and I quote, "I don't remember man, I went as far as it would go"...... So, My question is, how much should I turn it down to achieve a little to no smoke situation. My other F-250 was never toyed with since original and Couldn't blow smoke. Any help would be great.

Trial & error. I'd turn it down about 3 flats (1/2 turn) and try it.

Put a turbo on and take away the smoke.

Turbo'd IDIs are far better than regular ones, both in power, sound, and highway/high RPM efficiency.

Turning the pump down, however; basically you should just turn the pump until you get a slight hase of smoke at WOT going up a steep hill.
Also, remember that as your pump wears, it may need adjustment up to maintain the same amount of power.

Just remember that your foot controls the fueling; the screw is simply a max-fuel limiter. It's not like a gasser where you have a fixed air-fuel ratio; diesels run lean all the time, and the AFR varies based on throttle position. So if you back off on the throttle to where it doesn't smoke, you'll get the same effect as turning it down.

Don't be afraid to turn it down, though; adjustments are easy, if messy.
