Finally putting together an F-4 to drive around

Will need the typical: brakes, wiring, tune-up, wheels and tires (looking for a decent set of 9R22.5 tires-anyone)

PO had dropped it off to get painted and it got this far for his money, didn't want so spend more

I was getting tired of driving it in and out of the shop but not able to leave it outside

I'm not doing any bodywork since it was patched by the ok' guy I assume some time in the past - brazed in patches

I'm just painting it and leaving whatever patina is there

First things first, the head is cracked from freezing at some point-could have been him, could have been me who forgot to change the water out??

Jordon sent me a head to replace the cracked one- fluxed and decked .060" ($260 later -ouch) I guess it was pretty warped, but no cracks

Anyone ever see a totally naked head? No casting no's or anything

Couple more pics of the engine bay, dump bed etc

Going to cut off all the unnecessary angle iron and probably the headache board to make it prettier

Found a lot of loose stuff, not sure why but the steering box was so loose it was moving fore and aft 1/8" so I thought it was bad. Turns out it wasn't bolted to the frame but finger tight...

Right front bearing isn't seated either? Don't know if someone started servicing them and forgot to tighten, but there had to be 30years of gunk on the bolts so ...

The MH parts for the F5... Think I'll keep this on 2WD tho

I'll post pics as I go for others who may want to know what's involved with the big trucks before getting one.

my goal is to have it driving this summer

Great! Glad to see you already scored the wheels to replace the widow makers.

That head with no markings is a mystery... Original engine color is red.

Does the dump bed work?

Is that a 226 or a 254? Strange that every F-4 seems to have a 6 instead of a V8

My 49 F4 was originally a V8, now it is a 5. Was a 254 available in an F4?

Be sure to check clearance, valves and pistons to head. Good looking project truck and an F4 at that.

I thought it was, but looked in the manual and it says only the F-6's could be had with it.

Very cool, nice garage and shop setup.

It pays to go over everything on a "new" truck. Fingertight isn't always the recommended torque spec. Yikes!
