This is the 1949 Seagrave fire truck I normally drive in the Kentucky Derby Pegasus Parade, a couple days before the Derby. It has a 12 cylinder flat-head engine with dual ignition (switchable) and twin plug heads. That means four coils, two distributors, twenty-four spark plugs and twenty-eight spark wires. Also interesting is the intake and exhaust manifolds are both in the 'V' of the engine, it has twin carbs and two water pumps. The water pumps are located under the sides of the block where the exhaust manifolds would normally be located. The left-hand pump is driven by a shaft that extends through the belt-driven generator.
Not really. Low compression and a lot of fuel don't create much resistance so the spark is happy and willing to follow the path of least resistance. I've driven the truck for eight years and it hasn't missed a single time. Pretty much just check the oil, water, brake fluid and air in the tires and it's ready to go. It idles in low gear at human parade pace. Pretty much all I have to do is wave to the kiddies and smile at the pretty girls.
