Widowmaker continued

Widowmaker continued
I just purchased a 1952 F6 dump truck that has the dreaded 20" widowmaker wheels. I would like to replace them with the one piece design (19.5" or 22.5"). Are new steel wheels available for this purpose? Since I live in the Denver CO area, any suggestions for this area are welcome.

That's a beautiful truck you have!
I installed new 9-22.5's on my mixer with new wheels from American Wheel. Same dimensions as the OEM 8.25x20's. They don't have the five handholes, only two, but if you take your centers they can be remounted in the tubeless rims. Not sure if they will keep the same load rating though. Apparently you can only do that with the widowmaker and not the lock ring style.

Your nice truck looks familiar. Did you ever find some replacement wheels for your truck?

That is 8.25 wide X 20: in 8 " bolt pattern. I think i need to add that after all the people trying to sell me 8.25 bolt pattern 22.5 wheels

I have been researching this also. Chucks Trucks can replace the outer rim on your old widowmakers with the 22.5 I believe. It is a hefty price though. I really like the look of the split rim. It would be nice if a company were to step up and make a retro look tubeless rim for these trucks.

Thanks for the info on this thread. I have the 1955 F500 Stake side version and am at the 20" widow maker cross roads myself. Love the look of the old tire and debating going over to chucks trucks to have centers cut and re-welded into tubeless rims or trying the Florida wheel guy I keep seeing on here. Info on these forums are great help.

Les Schwab got the wheels from American Wheel Specialists in Pasco Wa and then for about $20 more, they blasted and powdercoated them for me. I seem to remember these (lock-ring type) wheels being about $200 each
They couldn't get 8.25-20 tires for me so I went to TOYO radial 9.00-20's on the front and recapped/radial 9.00-20s on the back. The entire job was about $2800
If I was doing it today, I would either get Rickson or other new manufacture 22.5 wheels so I could use 22.5" radial tubeless tires.
Cheers,
Rick

Not mentioned here yet is the option of finding a used set of locking side ring 20” wheels. If your tires are as nice as they look in the pictures this solution would let you keep them in service. This is also gonna be a less costly solution than the others. Chuck may have these available there in CT, and a few others of us also have sets available. Plus this CT CL ad offers a set of six with tires for $800. I have no connection to this seller. Stu

The mo-better ($$$) choice is still going to be new 22.5's though, and you'll never have to worry about wheels and tires again!
