20 qts of the correct fluid isn't that much of a price difference. Might as well pay the extra for Mercon V.

If i understand it correctly the tugger kit needs to have the transmission removed from truck, where as the Valve body (VB) replacement is a drop the pan deal.

the tugger kit is a better solution for something with who knows mile on trans if you are adapt that the deal.

to replace torque converter (TC) you have to remove trans so that kills two birds with one stone with the tugger kit solution. It more than a valve body upgrade I believe you do something to the pump, center support bearing and valves in VB..

Roland if the man on that stuff for sure.

good luck.

Thanks for the info! I was planning on buying the Tugger and putting the valve body on then doing the rest of the mod when I do the torque converter. It'll be a while but I like to plan ahead.

Mercon V is the only trans fluid recommended and licensed by Ford for use in the 4R100 transmission.

Dextron III / Mercon was the previous fluid recommended and licensed by Ford, but Ford changed that in 2006, reformulated Merc V and issued a TSB to stop using Dex III / Merc.

Manufacturers are still making Dex III/Merc, but since it's no longer licensed by Ford, there no way to be sure it's formulated to the specs recommended by Ford, so you might as well use Merc V.

In my experience a 4r100 will run fine on there fluid. While is a dead spec it seems most oil companis have kept to it. It has worked for 14 years the trans.

Full disclosure I am not implying that D/M is better in anyway way shape or for that mercon V. I have run merc V before and it works fine too. Truthfully I just like ease of finding 1 gallons of dex/merc vs buying 18 quart bottles.

Old thread but I found a cooler that I thought would be a good idea. Clay at RiffRaff has it.

This is the one you want. Will need fittings for it to work and bolts in the stock location. Check the tech folder for WoodNThings article.

Derale Atomic-Cool Cooler - 13750
That looks like a very expensive, but not very effective, cooler. The 6.0L cooler will work much better for you.
