Chipped PCM
I have a '96 F-350/7.3 Auto. Had tranny/torgue converter rebuilt. After approx. 200 mi. it acted as if it was in low range with OD light flashing. Returned to shop. They claimed BAD PCM. The original PCM had a Banks Chip in it. They replaced PCM and still had problem. Jump forward a month. After they replace d the transfer case, they claimed it was fixed. I picked it up, paid the bill and drove off. It ran very sluggish, and smoked profusely. I called another ford mechanic and was told that it won't right without a programmed chip because back in the day they replaced the injectors with dual port. Just to see, I replaced the new pcm with the chipped one they removed and it ran like a raped ape again. Question is finally; is each chip programmed to the specfic 3 letter/1 digit code? Or are chips transferable to another pcm. Thank for looking
I'd pull a valve cover and see exactly which injectors you have in there.
As far as the chip goes, if its on the J3 port in the PCM, you *should* be able to transfer it to your new PCM, provided it's the exact same hardware.
