Caution when reusing head studs...

I was doing the final torque sequence on the heads of the 6.9, was planning reusing the set of ARP head studs previously installed. They had been in the engine for probably 6 or more years of hard running. I had a couple of them go loose on me. I got on the phone with Justin at R&D and asked him his take on the situation. After discussing for a bit, we both came to the conclusion after a large number of heat cycles the fastener's strength can/will be compromised. Clearly not the fault of the ARP product, but simply the result of years of use and abuse. Thanks again going out to Justin for his help and dedication to the IDI community.

Yes, technically you are not suppose to re-use studs. That said, my studs are lightly used, and i have no qualms about using them.

I would definitely have to agree with you. Mine were in the engine for 6-7 years, which I might add was basically stock and N/A. I didn't baby it either most of the time when this truck was running, it either had a load behind it or a snow plow in front. I kick myself for not just replacing them as part of the rebuild, live and learn unfortunately it's kind of an expensive lesson learned on my part.

I'm thinking that when I rebuild this 6.9 motor I have, I'm going to drill and tap them to 9/16-18 and use grade 8 bolts. Much much cheaper and should be just as strong as 7/16 studs or even 1/2 studs.

I would be surprised if head studs weren't at least grade 10 and machined to a higher standard than bolts

I'm sure they are.

Exactly. Use a big enough bolt and you don't need the extra bolt strength.

Unfortunately, you guys won't hear about me doing this for a while, though; getting my 6.9 put together is kind of a back burner project -- with any luck, it'll end up in my Bobcat 975 skid steer.

No, when torqued to spec they should have no permanent stretch. You can go quite a bit over before you reach the yield strength. Here is the thread on head bolt and stud testing: Head bolt/stud tech thread
